Question:
I had gastric bypass on 11/05. I had complications with my legs.

No one can find the problem. I am still on 1200mgs every 4-5 hrs every day. I have numbing pain as well as nerve pinches below the knees. My knees get very numb and heavy. I just want to know if this has happened to anyone else. I should add that I also went through the laproscopy procedure also.    — miriammullings (posted on January 4, 2008)

I had the surgey 0n 5/14/2007. My weight loss is great however; I still have a numbing sensation in my legs. It is primarly on the left leg. I have gone to a spine specialist and he said that I have a constricted L45 nerve that is causing the issue. I hope that everything works well for you and congratulation on the surgery!!!

You did not say if you had nknee problems before surgery, but I did, and I find that things are better, but not perfect a month after my surgery. I am down 20 lbs before surgery and a additional 30 following with a 120 to go. I beleive that you may have a nerve issue and need to see a specialest.

I woke up during the first week post op with a numbing pain going down my leg, and asked the doc about it. Mine turned out to be sciatica, but he did say that if the pain persisted for longer than a few weeks I needed to see a neurologist. Evidently there is this weird neuropathy that can occur after WLS, and while it will go away on its own, it should be monitored. Mine was caused by sleeping differently than I usually do, as to protect my stomach....I hope that helps. God bless...

Anyone that looses alot of weight or gians alot, regardless of if by surgery or not might have a problem with the spine being out of adjustment which can give various different symptoms depending on which nerve is affected. Usually the nerves in the Lumbar area which is the lower part of the back causes pain or numbness to the leg and down behind the knee if they have any pressure on them. A neurosurgeon is the best source for a accurate diagnosis and most have the patient sent for a MRI help confirm. By the way what is the 1200mg are you taking??

I had Gastric Bypass on Sept 4th 2006 and I had numbness in my right thigh after surgery. It scared me to death; it woke me up out of my sleep one night. It felt like someone stuck a hot poker to my thigh. I went to the emergency room (small town) He said that a nerve in my leg was dying (Nothing that I could do about it) I was concerned that it might be a blood clot and he assured me it was not. It felt as if my thigh was asleep, I could rub it and feel me touching it but it felt numb. (If that makes any sense) The problem is a lot better every once in awhile I will notice a weird feeling in my thigh. Melinda
