Question:
I have a feeling of
nervousness. Yesterday i woke up and was so nervous and shaking that i had to go home from work. The feeling stayed through out the day and by bed time my gut just ached badly. I again today when waking up feel like i am not in my body. I am shaky and nervous again feeling. I know you are not suppose to but i had a couple of drinks on Sunday. Could this be alcohol poision from my stomach being so small? If anyone else has this feeling at times, please let me know how to get rid of it. I told myself yesterday that if I still had it today, i was going to call the doctor. I hate to call the doctor if it is something silly as i feel i am waisting his time and mine since he is an hour away. Any suggestions? — missyheffelfinger (posted on October 30, 2007)

First, make sure you don't have a sinus or other infection in your body. It
could be that it is a panic attack or the obvious thing is your body is
probably going into keytosis. I am not a doctor and don't pretend to know
what this is, but alcohol will exaserbate any problem like that. I would
probably vote for panic attaks, but please call the doctor to make sure
there is nothing else going on. The doctor isn't your enemy, he/she is
there to help you with your problems. Please call, you will feel better
after. Good luck

The feeling you are describing sounds very much like a panic attack, but
don't ever feel like you are wasteing your doctor's time. That is what they
are there for. You will probably talk to his nurse anyway, and if they feel
it is something of concern they will have you talk to your doctor. Have you
had panic attacks before? I had like 3 of them right before my surgery and
it was an awful feeling. The best and safest thing to do is call your doc.
Even if it's nothing, you will feel better knowing that and not worrying it
was something. Good luck!!

I have had the experience you are talking about, I found out that I was not
drinking enough water or taking my b-12 like I should have been. I got
busy and started drinking more water, and taking vit like I am suppose to.
Also found out that I needed to eat slower and that also helped. Good luck

Maybe your blood sugar is out of whack.

Could be a panic attack, but also vote to call your surgeon. He may want
to check your blood chemistries, including blood sugar, kidney function and
electrolytes. I doubt it's from the alcohol, but maybe you didn't eat and
drink enough water because of the alcohol?

Could be any number of things, like a panic attack. I used to feel like
that back 6 yrs ago when I was on medicine because my panic attacks were
bad. BUT hopefully this will teach you a lesson NOT TO DRINK! You are
playing with fire when you do that at only 6 months out, and alcohol
SEVERELY dehydrates you! Step up even MORE water than ever before from
that drinking Sunday. Also, contact your surgeon, that's what he is there
for. We are not doctors here, and do not dismiss this as if it is severe
dehydration, you WILL need to be hospitalized unless you want to do your
body harm. Good luck and God bless!

I am not a doctor, but having had surgery about a month prior to you - I
can honestly say I think it is either a panic attack and or ongoing
anxiety. I have a prescription for anxiety pills (both for sleep and during
the day when I get that nervousness and antsy feeling and can't focus).
They help. My PCP prescribed them. If it persists, I would see your PCP and
see about help. Or....maybe you were having an off couple days. There have
been plenty of times after surgery where I have days when I don't feel like
myself. Not in a bad way persay - just off. Adjustment - getting to know my
new self. Anxiety over finances, buying new clothes (rapid weight loss and
keeping in clothes that you feel good in, adds up), over work and case
load, over daily crap. You used to turn to food for comfort and support.
You don't have it anymore - so you find other ways to deal - talk a walk,
hot shower, bubble bath, read a book or magazine, walk the dog, whatever.
If the feeling doesn't pass....I pop a pill and feel better. Will I ever go
off? Sure. I don't take them everyday. Maybe one every week or two
sometimes three. Does it get better with time? Sure, time heals all wounds.
:) Good luck. Hope that helped.

Missy...although I agree somewhat with the other posters, I also have to
wonder if your blood sugar is wildly flucuating or if you have had your
thyroid tested. Please be sure and get these 2 things check out as you may
be experiencing hypoglycemic reactions or if you take a thyroid hormone,
your dosage could need adjusting as mine did.
If I eat something that could spike my sugar and then it drop dramaticly
(such as a few bites of ice cream) I will get this feeling you are
describing and when I fingerstick my blood sugar it usually is below 60
when I get the feelings you describe. Many of the sugar testing machines
are cheap to free these days and you wouldnt need too many strips(the
expensive part of testing) to test only when you feel this way. You dont
need a prescription to get one either unless you are wanting your insurance
to cover the cost of the strips. My hypoglycemic episodes are usually
transient and go away within 45 mins or so. Keep an eye on it and be sure
to discuss with your doc! [email protected]

Hi Missy! My own personal opinion....I dont suppose its a panic attatck,
not unless you are. Alcohol has a lot of effect on your blood sugar levels
as well. There are a lot of calories, empty calories in alcohol. I would
def call the doctor if you havent already. I think this is why doctors
advise not to drink, but if you do, watch your consumption.

I started having this happen and it turns out it was my blood sugar was
droping very low, I was at work one night and my boss called the medics and
they said I had to go to the hospital, my doctor said that since I stay
away from sugar so much due to my RNY, that when I do take in sugar such as
in a drink then my body over produces insulin and it drops my levels very
quickly, I now know when it is starting and taking a few sips of orange
juice makes me feel normal, but the best thing to do is go see your own
doctor.

Low blood sugar can cause anxiety and shaking. Anxiety itself can cause
shaking.
Call your doc! That's what he is there for. The great thing about
telephones is that it doesn't matter whether he is five minutes or five
hours away. Most doc's will give you telephone advice or help you figure
out if you need to be seen.
Alcohol poisoning is basically an alcohol overdose. Alcohol affects the
central nervous system and too much will slow your breathing and heart rate
and impair your gag reflex (making it more likely that you will inhale
rather expel stomach contents if you vomit). Alcohol poisoning causes
unconsciousness, coma, and death. If you are coordinated enough to type,
it is very unlikely that you are suffering from alcohol poisoning.
It is possible that alcohol has caused you to develop some anxiety or
perhaps temporarily affected your blood sugar... but as we metabolize
alcohol fairly quickly, it is unlikely that you would be feeling the
effects this far out.
Best wishes.
