Question:
I am 12 days post-op RNY and am feeling rather blah.
I just don't know how else to explain it. I am drinking my water, tea, clear liquids. I am also getting in as much protein drink as I possibly can (it's not as easy as it seems!) but I just seem to feel kind-of yucky. My concern is that I will be returning to work on the 16th of July and I don't know if I can handle it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? — dre_1974 (posted on July 11, 2007)

Hi Andrea, I was out 6 weeks with my RNY. I was just to weak feeling to go
back at 2-3 weaks. If you can afford it, get your docotor to sign a note
keeping you out for another 2 weeks. Tell him/her that you just dont feel
up to par yet. Best Wishes, Mickey.........

I am 5 weeks out from lap bypass and was often tired. Are you taking
vitamins? is there any soft food you can add (fat-free cream soups really
helped me). Are you able to do some walking? Moving around also really
helped boost my energy. I agree with the previous post, ask your doc to
keep you out longer if you can. Nuturance and rest make all the difference.
Oh, are you getting enough sleep? Good luck

My Lord girfriend, you are only 12 days post op? You just had major
surgery, what makes you think it is odd? I think the unusual would be if
you were anything less then tired. Give it some time, the anesthetic takes
2 weeks to completely clear out of your system. I also think there is a big
mental thing you have to go through. Sort of like being in mourning from
our old eating habits. I have not gone through the R-EN-Y as yet, but I
have had a shi- load of surgeries and I know that after it is always a bit
difficult. Don't panic, just add more then the protien drink to your menu
and you just might start feeling a little better every day. I'm pulling for
you.

I think what you are feeling is very normal. If you need more time, try to
get a doctor's note to stay out of work for a bit longer to gain more
strength. Try moving a little bit.....perhaps walking for some mild
exercise to give you some energy. In the meantime, remember you have been
through major surgery and you need to give yourself a break in feeling like
you do. It is very normal. Hang in there....I am with you!

It's called you are recovering from MAJOR surgery---REST REST REST. I
don't feel you should be going back to work so soon. Either that or try
going back half days...Good luck!

You're experiencing a very common thing. I've had days when I thought I'd
never make it from the pits, but God always pulled me through. My Dr calls
this depression "Buyers remorse" and said I would get through it.
Luckily I did, and things are so much better now. Good luck! (((( hugs

Andrea- it takes a few months to start to feel like your old self- I would
get spurts of energy and then fizzle out until about 3-4 mos post op-keep
up what you are doing- believe me it will turn around. Donna

I did the same thing two weeks out. It lasted about 10 days for me. I was
feeling sad, and I didn't care whether I ate, lost weight, or anything. I
just seemed to snap out of it. I prayed a lot, too. I was really
concerned that I wouldn't come out of it. I did...and you will too. We're
pulling for you!

Having the 'blahs' after a major surgery is not uncommon. You should get
over it soon. If you do not, please seek professional help since there may
be something else going on here that is caused by factors largely unrelated
to your surgery.

It took a couple of weeks for me to get my mind straight --I couldn't even
concentrate on homework and had to request an incomplete so I wouldn't fail
the class. Yes, from time to time I get a little tired --this may or may
not happen to others and you just have to rest. Just because you're
feeling good, looking good on the outside -- don't let that fool you. Get
your rest, take your vitamins and drink plenty of water --please drink the
water to avoid constipation -- not a good thing to be. I was out 4 weeks
and was sure to take a couple of protein drinks with me and bottle of water
everyday. My job is sitting all day so I do more drinking than eating.
I'm almost 5 months out and 70 pounds down --so give your body time to heal
-- all will be well.
