try chewable calcium citrate, i get it from bariatricadvantage or I also use a liquid by Tropical Oasis, 1T a day is 1200 mg....I order it from vitacost.com. There are powdered calciums that you can add to yogurt and shakes that are flavorless too.

I chew a Tums twice a day and that takes care of my daily calcium requirement. If you purchase the Tums in the bottle, they come in several assorted flavors.

I take the chewable calcium chews I buy at walmart. I buy the cheaper brand called Spring Valley chewable calcium. Each chew has 500 mgs. Depending on how far out from surgery you are, they do have sugar free one's too, also with 500 mg in each chew. They taste good as well...good luck!

You need CALCIUM CITRATE, not calcium carbonate (so Tums and Viactiv will not given you the calcium that you need). The chewable Calcium Citrate (which you can get at Wild Oats, Vitamin Shoppe and lots of other places) usually has a daily dose of 4 tablets. If you have one in the morning (I take mine as I get into the shower) and then the remainder at night (it takes the place of a late night snack), you can get it all in. As for the liquids, you do need to pace yourself-- keep a bottle of water in your car, extra bottles at your work and never leave home without something to sip. You would be surprised how easy it is to get in all your water when you always have something to drink by your side.

I take calcium chocolate soft chews twice a day. I get them at Walmart. You can also get sugar free once if you have diabetes. As far as the rest of it; it can all be difficult at times. I do the 50 grand slam protein in a can from GNC. And it is also a struggle to get in all the water as well. Protein is very important; without enough we slow our progress, and can cause major complications! Best wishes and good luck. Judy R

Have you tried the chewable calcium citrate? I do four of those a day -- 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening --those come with 400 IU of Vitamin D; however, you're suppose to have betwee 800-1000 so I take an extra Vitamin D. Although I am almost 4 months out -- I'm still doing the chewables. I asked about those and the nurse said they were okay.

I agree with the previous posts that we NEED calcium CITRATE, not bicarbonate. Tums and viactive will not be absorbed. I like the chewable bariatric advantage in cinnamon. They have other flavors as well. I get mine at a local store... they have a website: www.c2linfo.com I like taking the chewables the best. Good luck! Robin

As far as the posters who claim we need citrate instead of carbonate, there is NO difference in absorbing qualities! I did research on this as I wondered why my nutritionist said to get the chews or whatever form of calcium we want. I found the info on the no differences at this site. You can also research for yourself by googling. http://www.calciuminfo.com/about/supplements.aspx So the chews ARE ok. Good luck!

Hi! I was prescribed Caltrate with Vitamin D chewables. They come in Vanilla and Chocolate. If you like chocolate they taste like candy. Good luck! I bought mine at WalMart.

try upcal d, tasteless powder, add to anything. i just posted this to the grad forum, but with the responses here (listen to steve), i will copy & paste. in brief, was walking my dog, he saw bunny, i didn't, he bolted and I SPLAT. went to doc in box, said nothing broken, just muscle. OK, here's the pasted part: that little mishap i had 5/30 was not a "strained muscle". i left home 6/1 for ASBS conf 6/11-16 and various speaking things thereafter. planned some extra days with yahoo grad list buddies and had 'em ask for an appt with an ortho. my L arm is completely shattered inside! about 1" down fron shoulder ball. 2 separATE pices, side by side. i rode 1500 miles in an aging Dodge diesel truck with my arm dangling? thought i was a wimp cuz the pain was so hideous. so immediate surgery to metal plate me back together again. no cast, thank goodness , 4 days in hosp, and the next 4 weeks, ASBS, speaking, support group mtgs we might have attended... POOF! gone at least i am "stuck" with some angels on earth here in Hanford, CA. so, forgive my tardiness. now, you're thinking, "And this has to do with WLS...how?" i am always crying for more calcium, more vit D, right? my levels are good NOW, BUT FOR THE FIRST 6 YRS, I WAS ONLY TAKING 1500MG CALCIUM CARBONATE! and was dx with osteoporosis. it doesn't have to be this way for YOU! doc confirmed that anyone who had a fall/flight like mine would've fractured. the main diff for me is that a normal person would've had "mahogany" to screw the plate into. i have crispy toast! so, please ppl, well over 2000mg of calcium CITRATE, keep vit d, 25 levels about 60-70 (new range is 32-100), every day, no missed days, no excuses. brands that are NOT ok include OScal, Caltrate, Tums &"everything i need is in this special bariatric product". by the time i got that right, it was too late. carbonate will help your vlood levels look good, but it is NOT absorbed in any bypassed gut. carbonate needs acid, even with a full stomach, best case is 8%. citrate needs non-acid (that's us) and best rate is 48%. don't be stubborn and end up with toast for bones!
