Question:
Help, I can't get in my 48oz of water per day!

I try so hard, but it makes me feel bloated when i drink, i am never thirsty, and i'm lucky if I can drink 24oz a day! Any suggestions? I am ok with my protein (could be better) and seem to be doing ok with my weight loss. I am 1 month post-op and down about 25 pounds...    — kittyluver77 (posted on May 1, 2007)

Stacy....in the beginning I had a hard time, too. I started playing a game with myself - while at work - I would drink everytime an email came in - which is like every minute, all day long. When I am at home - watching TV, I would sip through the commericals. Now, drinking becomes second nature. They recommend (my NUT) we get at least 1 liter of water per day - I can do it with ease now. Playing those games with myself got me to change my habits. Doing something for 30 days make something become a habit. Do something that works for you, but it helps until you get the sipping through the day down.

That's good 25 pounds down your 1st month. Here is what I started doing -- I use small glasses -- 8 ounce glasses. I sip while I'm getting dressed and depending on how I feel, I'll get in an 8 ounce glass of water and an 8 ounce glass of soymilk. When we leave home @ 7 PM I either have a Dr. Atkins drink with me, which I don't open until I get in the car and I sip it for the next hour and by then I'm at work at 8 AM. Sometimes I don't drink anything for another 2 hours and then I'll get some water. I put a reminder on my email to stop drinking at 11:30 because my lunch is at noon. Then I can't have anything to drink until 1 PM and I grab some water again. I don't get in 64 ounces of water -- but I get in close to that in LIQUIDS. Liquids are my breakfast and I do that because it takes too long to eat. If I want to eat breakfast, I wait until I get to work and the chef prepares me an omelet.

It is very hard in the beginning and it does get better. It was probably 2 months before I was getting 64 oz. Like the others, I played mind games in the beginning to get it down. I had to get one 24 oz bottle down by lunchtime and then another before I left work. That plus the protein shakes did me good. Now (and for last 6 months), I shoot for 3 24-oz bottles down at work, 2 protein shakes and anything extra in the evening is gravy. Just keep working at it. All of the sudden you will realize that it wasn't quite as hard to get that 48 oz down as it used to be. Then push for more. Good luck!

Another thing that I do is drink a lot of warm tea. It seems to go down easier.

it was very hard in the beginning. I am about 18 months out, and some days are still hard. I get tired of drinking, but you have to do it. Find something you like and keep drinking. I do the flavored waters, Propel water, the one-drink mixes you can buy at the store like Crystal Light or one of the other brands (I like Fulfil, which is also sold at Krogers under their brand), I like the decaf ice-tea mix. Anything that gets the liquid in. You don't want to get dehydrated, because you will end up in the hospital with an IV in your arm. Good luck
