Question:
Anyone having sore tounge issues ?
I am 10 weeks out and developing red sore spots on my tounge. Do you think I might not be getting enough of something? I do eat a lot of listerine breath strips, but never heard of this happening? — cbarrientez (posted on February 25, 2007)

Usually sore tongue/burning mouth indicate a problem with B12, which WOULD
be a common WLS problem, but you are early out. That's ASSUMING you went
in with a full load of B12. Even if you are young, it's possible you were
low. My DIL was 31 befor her WLS and was clinically low (which means
WAAAAY low by MD standards). But in your case, why not skip the Strips for
48 hours and see if your mouth improves? If not, call the doc, ask for
exam and testing.

Hello,
I am still preop so I am not sure, but I work for a dentist. The breath
strips can do that. Those ones are really strong. You want to use tooth
paste, mouth wash , and FLOSS, and nothing with alchlool. Try PRO HEALTH.

Try not using the breath strips for a week and see if it clears up. If
not, call your doctor.

If you feel your breath is bad, dip your wet toothbrush into some baking
soda, arm and hammer-yellow box. I usually pour a little into my clean hand
and then brush your tongue and gums along with your teeth. My husband used
to use those strips, but they only work for a little while. After I
convinced him to brush his tongue with baking soda, he never has bad
breath.

I don't know much about the Listerine strips but if they are anything like
the mouthwash (which has a whole lot of alcohol), that could be the cause.
I'd stop using the breath strips for at least a week to see if that makes
the spots better or worse.
I get thrush a lot as a side effect of some meds I am on. The first
symptom I experience is small sore red spots on my tongue, cheeks/gums, and
the roof of my mouth. You might want to do a web search on thrush (or even
thrush and listerine).
If it doesn't go away or gets worse, it might be worth a trip to you
primary care doctor.
Best wishes!

I had the same problem. My dentist said my toothpaste(colgate) and
listerine were too strong. I swithched to Crest and haven't had any
problems.

As long as you are taking enough B-12 I have another wonderful
suggestion...Don't laugh, head to your local Walmart or Big Lots and buy
the old fashioned red Lavoris. Yup, the red one with the cinnamon taste. I
have advised this for years to people who are on chemotherapy and it works
much better than the old steroid mouthwash. It will burn but will help so
much with a sensitive tongue and mouth ulcers. Use it twice a day and hold
it in your mouth, swishing around for at least one minute. DO NOT buy any
flavor other than the red cinnamon as it will not work. Best of luck and
be persistent! MudAlice, RN
