Question:
Hairloss! how can I slow it down?

I'm currently 4 months out today and have already lost 1/2 my excess weight due to gallbladder complication's I got very malnourished for about 4 to 5 weeks, but now that everything is back on track what else is there to stop or at least slow down he hairloss. I'm currently taking 2 centrum chewables a day plus my Dr. put me on an additional vitamin A for 3 weeks because it was a little low I take a 2000mcg B-12 lozenge once a week and I try to get in at least 40 to 60 grams of protien a day, I'm stilltrying to build that one up, but what else can I do? any recommendation's are greatly appriciated! 245/182/135    — HAILEY (posted on July 27, 2006)

Your body has been through a stressful experience and with the loss of protein it is going to take time. Once you get a stable amount of protein on a regular basis it will slow down and then you will start to re-grow your hair which will take about 6 months. It is a small price to pay...

This is normal for you body to let go of the hair. You body is giving the nutrients and protein to other parts of your body so the hair follicles go dormant like and hair falls out. I took my vitamins (multivitamin, B12, biotin), got in 80 grams protein a day, fluids, and still lost a large percentage of my hair. It will slow down after a few months and start to regrow. I used a hair regrowth stimulant finally to help my hair along and that helped. Good luck with everything. Email me if you wish to know what hair product I used at [email protected]

Everyone say's that hairloss is due to lack of vitamins in your diet after weight loss surgery. But, my personal opinion is that is just from the shock that your body goes through after the surgery. I think it's from the dramatic changes your body makes after the surgery but your hair will start growing back after about 6 months post op. I'm 5 months out now and my hair is falling out like crazy but from others I know that have had the surgery say their hairloss slowed down around the 6-7 month. ~melissa

It's more about the shock to the system than it is protein or nutrients. This happens from other surgical procedures too. It is called Telogen Effluvium. Read more about it at: http://www.emedicine.com/DERM/topic416.htm

My daughter and I both had a lot of hair loss, she more than I though. I had a hairdresser recommend a product called "Nioxin" that was developed for chemo patients that were experienceing hairloss. I had to get it at the salon and it was fairly expensive, but it definately worked for us. I is a 3 part process, 2 products that you used in the shower and 1 that you applied after you got out. Smelled terrible and makes your head tingle. I'm not sure what the technical reasons were for how it worked, I just know it did. Just know that your hair will come back so don't worry.

There isn't a lot you can do about the hair loss, We all went through it,. It will grow back starting at about 6 months. Since your system is down so far in nutrients you chould also be taking Iron supllements & I don't see where you are taking any calcium at all. That is very important as well. The protein should be closer to 70 to 100 grams & to do that (even though some Dr.s don't believe in them) Drink Whey protein shakes. 2 to 3 of them a day. For a little while you might want to take 2 of the centrum in the a.m & 2 more in the evening to get some of those nutrients back up in your system. Glad you are feeling better. Marilyn
