Question:
1 week post-op and can't get in the protein
I am 1 week post-op and I can't stand those cib drink. I have been lucky to get in 10 to 12 grams a day. it makes me sick to my stomach. Does anyone know of a tasteless protein powder that I can put on food or drinks? Hugs always Carrie =0) — CARRIE C. (posted on October 2, 2003)

I would do real protein drinks. ProCel is flavorless. I think you can buy
it at GNC. I use Real Meals. www.protein-solutions.com
In the beginning I mixed the protein powder in with sugar free pudding.
Made it taste like chocolate/vanilla cake mix.

I use Pro Performance 100% whey protein, unflavored, from GNC

I also wanted to add.. That at 1 wk post op, it's very hard to get in all
of your protein.. SO DON'T STRESS! It takes anywhere from 1-2 months
before you can establish your full protein intake. Also, I am 4wks out and
I use the Slim Fast Soy Protein shakes. But even now I still only get
40-60 grams of protein a day. But I am sure by the end of this month it'll
be about 90 grams...

Believe me I am no pro, but my friend had her WLS in August. At one week
post-op she came to stay with me and this is what I did for her to help her
get in over 40 grams of protein. I cooked 1 chicken breast on the George
Forman grill then I cooked some Campbell's Simply Home Chicken Noodle soup
then cut the chicken into small pieces and blended it together small
amounts at a time. She loved it!! I replaced it in the jar and she was
able to pour whenever she wanted more and it stayed warm for a long time in
the jar. The soup has Fat 1gram, Protein 6grams and the chicken it self
has 40grams of protein. But the down side is the soup does have 850mg. of
sodium. Don't know but it sounds like alot to me.

I have used the unflavored protein from www.unjury.com. It can mix with a
spoon, you can put it in broths, jello, pudding, sf crystalite, etc...
It's great for a protein gap. God BLess on your new journey.

Sounds like you have not even had a shot at a good protein drink that
shakes up easily in a little water (add ice, as desired). They range from
icky to "OMG, is this LEGAL?" You can get samples of many,
including the ProCel. Dink around with them, find the one you love.

An earlier poster is right: at one week out don't stress about being able
to get all your protein. You do need protein to heal, but just do the best
you can. The first month or six weeks out, "double protein" milk
saved me (get powdered milk and make it according to the package
directions, but substitute skim milk for water--you get double the protein
of milk alone). Do be sure to get all your liquids in, as dehydration is a
bigger factor than protein the first month or so.

Hi Carrie-- don't stress! You're a new post-op, so of course you're having
trouble getting protein! Concentrate on drinking water, maybe doing some
walking and relax A LOT-- you need to heal. As you heal, you'll be able to
get in more protein. For me, I spent the first 2 weeks drinking chicken
broth and water. I couldn't really stomach much of the pureed diet. That
changed at the 3rd week when I could do a protein shake twice a day (my
personal fave is ProScore Chocolate). Take Michelle Curran's advice and try
out some samples, and also take Vespa Rider's suggestion of double protein
milk (I drank that, too.)if you are allowed to have milk.

Carrie,
I am 1 week post op as well, and I cannot even get barely any protein in I
do the best I can though. How about refried beans? Those have tasted sooo
good to me. Add some powdered milk to some things if you can. If you do get
a protein mix and you can tolerate skim milk I only make 4 oz of that with
milk though. I hope you feel better soon !

The best advice is to go out there and try some samples. You can order
them from some places online. I use www.wlssupplies.com. The person who
owns it had WLS also. There are a few others out there who offer samples
you should check them out!

hiya! i can relate, at 2 weeks post op i threw up every protein type drink
i tried and the cib (even made with lactaid) made me sick.
i went off protein drinks until 4 mos post op when i was told that NO
PROTEIN=MALNUTRITION and was "turned on" to jarrows iso rich soy
protein.
eventually i could tolerate whey protein again after finding one that is
almost tasteless...
i use several different types/brands, check them out in my file called
"my supplements" on my website at: www.geocities.com/katebme2002
good luck,
kate
