I'm 3 years out and never have had gallbladder problems. I think the
figure is something like 30% develop gallbladder problems post-op. I
believe Actigall is that medication the previous poster was talking about.
I never took it, but I know some doctors prescribe it.

Jennifer, I am 5 wks post-op Open RNY, I did not have my gall baldder
removed. I asked my dtr about putting me on Actigall, which prevents
gallstones. But, he told me that you need to take these pills for THE REST
OF YOUR LIFE and if you stop taking them, you will increase your chances of
getting either gallstones or require removal. Don't like this idea, plus,
he says only 10-20% have to have removal later anyway. Good Luck...I am
sure you are getting alot of different responses, but, I just talked to my
dtr about this at my apt on Friday.

I still have my gallbladder...I've been taking Actigall for the the past
three and half months. The surgeon recommends six months of Actigall
postop.

My surgeon does not remove the gallbladder if it is healthy. He did
prescribe Actigall - to be used for SIX MONTHS -THEN DISCONTINUE. Actigall
is "bile salts". I think patients should clarify with their
surgeon - I am betting it is 6 months.

My surgeon normally removes gall bladders as a matter of course. I told
him that I only wanted him to take mine out if it was diseased. When he
opened me up, he realized my gall bladder was 100% normal, and he left it
in. I am now 17+ months post-op and have had NO PROBLEMS with my gall
bladder. I am relieved he left it in and am hoping for the best. (Never
did take Actigall and never plan to.)

He didn't touch mine. Hasn't said anything about it post op either. I'm
only 2 months out, but not taking anything for it. It wasn't a concern
until one of my support groups, now it stays in the back of my mind....

Jennifer, I've still got my gall bladder and have had no trouble. I took
Actigall for about 2 weeks, but it was messing me up, so with the doctor's
blessing, I stopped. And still have no trouble.... Good luck to you.
