Question:
WHAT DOES A LIQUID DIET BEFORE SURGERY CONSIST OF?
YOU KNOW THE DRILL,7 DAYS BEFORE LIQUIDS ONLY THEN 5 DAYS BEFORE NO SUGAR? WHAT ARE "LIQIUDS?" CHICKEN AND RICE SOUP,MUSHROOM SOUP,BROCCOLI AND CHEESE SOUP? ARE THOSE OKAY? — TINA M. (posted on May 6, 2002)

I'm having surgery tomorrow, and yesterday I had to start a clear liquid
diet. I had Campbell's chicken noodle soup with the noodles and chicken
strained out, Jell-o, grape juice, cranberry juice, Sierra Mist, and
popscicles. The nurse at my pre-op tests said that a clear liquid is any
liquid you can hold up to the light and see through. That includes pretty
much any juice except orange juice and prune juice, I figure. But like the
previous poster said, you probably should call your doctor's office and ask
them what liquids they require. I've never heard of anyone having to be on
a liquid diet for 7 days before surgery, so maybe your doctor will allow
liquid food with a little more substance. Good luck!

This depends upon the surgeon. My pre-op was high amount of protien from
the time surgery was scheduled until 3 days before surgery. Then 2 days of
soft food, mushy, etc, no salads or raw veggies. Then clear liquids day
before surgery (didn't exclude sugar. I had lots of popsicles and jello.)
