Question:
Constant belching after I eat or drink anything. Is this common?
If i don't belch I became queezy until I do. — BOBBY M. (posted on November 25, 2001)

Hi Bobby. I asked a pretty similar question weeks ago. I was told by the
people that answered me that this is normal. The people here recommended
Gas-X, which helped. I also ran this by my doctor and he said that using a
gas medication was fine. Some folks say this goes on up to three or fuor
months post op. I'm just barely over two months post op (down 55lbs) and
still have this problem, but it's not as severe as it was just weeks post
op. I just explained all this to the girls at work and say excuse me when
I burp and they don't pay any attention to me. It's like burping relieves
the pressure of a full stomach. If it's related to what I eat I haven't
figured that out yet. Good luck!! I hope this helps.

I did this too for awhile, it eventually went away. I am 4 months post op
and if I eat too fast it still occurs occasionally. There are lots of minor
things like this, all a good trade off to loose so much weight.

I'm 9 months post-op. What you're describing happened to me a lot my first
4-5 months but doesn't happen as much anymore. I still have it bad though
if I ever cheat and have a carbonated drink!

I think we always will belch more post op than pre op. However it lets up
alot with time.

Thats when I know I have too much in my pouch, whether from drinking too
much or too big a bite of food. I use the burping as my bodies way of
telling that I'm going too fast. The slower I eat and drink, no burping
occurs.

I burped after eating for the first 10 months...regardless of what or how
much I ate. I still (at 17 mos. postop) belch much more than I did
pre-op...but I try to do it quietly. I've never heard a satisfactory
explanation of why this occurs. I don't believe it is because the pouch is
too full...sometimes it isn't full at all.

I asked my surgeon about this around 2 months post op. He explained it like
this, everyone has gas when they eat or drink, in a regular stomach it's
flexible and will expand to allow the gas to escape, thus we don't always
notice all the air bubbles. With our tight little stomach in the beginning
it won't expand for the excess air, thus we notice more belching....it has
to go somewhere :o) I was told as my stomach expanded more, the gas would
be less noticeable but not always will it go away totally.

Hi Bobby. I am 3 weeks post-op. I belch quite a bit too while eating and
after, and drinking sometimes too. It is getting better as time goes
along. I feel SO much better when I do get the air out of my stomach. I
wouldn't be overly concerned. You may want to contact your doctor if it
gets worse. Good luck!
