Question:
Am I losing too slowly?

I am 5 weeks and 2 days post op and have only lost 19 lbs. I am 5'6" and my starting weight was 355. I feel like I should have lost more. What's up?    — kittymama03 (posted on November 2, 2010)

We had this discussion last night about this at my support group, because a lady like yourself was out 5 weeks too and she wasn't losing. She told the group that she was eating carbs and veggies. With my Dr, at 5 weeks out, I was only allowed to eat protein, no carbs, other than milk. Plus at 5 weeks out I was on pureed foods as well. Ask your NUT, she will tell you what you are doing right or wrong. I can't tell you if you are on the right track or not, your DR or NUT can. At 5 weeks out I lost around 28 lbs so you aren't too far off. Do you walk or exercise?

Hi And Congrats on your weight loss surgery and loss so far!! Sounds like the weight loss is good. As long as you are losing..there is no such thing as too slow to me. I was the slowest loser in the beginning. only like 2 lbs a week..but once i found the sweet spot >eating enough to offset the calories in etc< it just melted off and I was at goal by 10 months. The other poster mentioned discussing it with your nutritionist..thats my advice too...My nut put things into motion for me. I journaled and then showed her what all I was eating etc and she found the right thing for me. Everyone is different with different amounts to lose and diff ailments etc, so I cannot say what worked for me , will work for you. Its all trial and error in the beginning. Everyone is in a hurry to lose the weight, but slower helps you have a chance to tone up some as you lose. Do incorporate exercise as soon as you are OKed to do so. Just walking is great for you! Keep on track and give yourself the first full year to lose all the weight. a year isn't such a long time...and you will have the rest of your life to enjoy !! hugs n God Bless, kim

At week 5 I had lost all of 14.4 lbs (I am 5'7", started at 382 lbs, and had a RNY). It's been ten months since surgery and I've lost 97 lbs so far. For quite a while it bothered me that I was such a SLOOOOOOW loser, but you have to stop comparing yourself to others. Some lose quickly, some slowly, but it all comes off in the end. Talk to your doctor and nut if you are worried, but it is probably nothing. Make sure you drink your water, get at least 60 grams of protein, and walk as much as you are able (I've had to work up to the 30 minutes). I also try to stay between 900 and 1000 calories each day - which allows me "wiggle room" to live my life and not feel deprived. If you feel you have barely lost any weight, go to the grocery store, pick up a 20 lb box of kitty litter or bag of potatoes, and carry it five or ten feet ... It will help you realize that 19 pounds lost is NINETEEN POUNDS YOU'RE NOT CARRYING ANYMORE!!! Wow! That is REALLY awesome.
