Question:
This phobia is taking over my life!

Hi, I am having RNY gastric bypass on August 16th. As the date gets closer, I find myself kind of freaking out for no apparent reason at all. I've been looking at WLS patients on youtube, but also watched a lot of videos on anesthesia and I worry soooo much about waking up during surgery, "anesthesia awareness", mind you, I've had other surgeries before with no prob, even had knee surgery in October and did fine, do you think it's just because the nature of this surgery is making me freak out?? Do you know anyone who has had issues with this? Sorry if I'm not making any sense, lol... I go for my pre-op stuff on July 20th and can talk to the anesthesia docs that day...    — Clumsybarbie (posted on June 22, 2010)

With all the publicity about the extremely rare occurence of "anesthesia awareness," it's probably pretty normal to worry a bit about it before surgery (I worred a little about it). I know a lot of people that had this surgery, and I don't know of anyone who woke up during this or any other surgery. It's okay and normal to get nervous. Just try to focus on the happy excitement for the wonderful new life you're about to have. Congrats.

I think it's normal too. At least I hope so. LOL I'm going through the same thing. My date is July 7th so I'll let you know if I wake up during the surgery! Right now I'm cleaning the house and trying to keep busy and active. Best Wishes! You'll do great!

I am three months out from RNY and doing great! I had the same fear and it is always something to be aware of but not freak yourself out about. You have to weigh everything and make the best possible desicion for you and your situation. I am happy I did it and continue to focus on the positive! Good luck and hang in there!
