Question:
How do you keep get water in 8 days post -op ?
How do you get in 64oz of water everyday in order not to dehydrate because I can sip water but not 64oz a day are there any suggestions on how to get water in and keep it down. — Tamc27 (posted on May 12, 2010)

Keep in mind that every surgeon has different instructions. My
instructions were to drink 2oz of protein at the top of the hour, then
drink 2-4oz of hydrating fluid every 15 minutes. I don't think I ever got
64oz in so early after surgery, but if you stay dedicated to drinking every
hour (that you're awake) then you should be ok. Good luck! The first
three weeks, to me, were the hardest so far (I'm about 8 weeks out now).

I agree with Fran that each surgeon has his or her own rules but this is
nothing I've ever heard of. Are you really supposed to be drinking 64
ounces of water in addition to drinking your protein or is he/she asking
you to consume a total of 64 ounces of liquid each day? Even if it's a
total of 64 ounces per day it's a lot required at only 8 days out since
your organs are still healing. At 8 days out I wasn't consuming a total of
64 ounces of popcicles, jello, water, protein, and ice. My suggestion to
you is to call your dietition and ask for clarification of your fluid
requirement and ask them for suggestions of how to get it all in. That's
what they are there for.

I am 5 weeks out and I am still struggling to get in 64 oz of liquids.
However, as time goes by it gets better. Do as much as you can everyday
and you will soon find yourself drinking more. At first I did not have
desire for anything but about 2 weeks ago I started to desire more water.
Keep up the good work, it gets easier. Bee Gee

Sip, sip, sip! It does get better but you must sip, I drink more than 64
oz now but it was difficult when I first had my surgery, but it is
essential.
Good luck

The 64 oz is a goal that you work toward. I don't know anyone yet that came
out of surgery able to get that much in right away. It is a process of
sipping continuously during waking hours. Now is the time that you drink
(and eat) according to schedule, not hunger, so fill your glass and sip
away. My surgeon allowed us to count our protein shakes. Also, SF popsicles
are frozen fluid so they count too -- 2 oz each. I found them very helpful
early out. I didn't feel quite so "sloshy". Again, the 64 oz is
a goal to strive for. As long as you are sipping throughout the day you
won't dehydrate. You will find it much easier in about 2-3 weeks when the
internal swelling will have gone down considerably and by 6 months out you
will feel much more normal about eating and drinking again.

I had my surgery over a year ago and yes it takes effort to get in this
much water. I have no problem getting that much down (water goes right
thru) as long as I do it 15 minutes BEFORE I eat and at least 1 hour AFTER
I eat. We have a water cooler in our kitchen so it is always cold and readily available. I find that
ice cold water is a little tougher
to get down in large quantities. Water is very important...dehydration was
never a concern of mine, but I know from YEARS AND YEARS of dieting that
water is key. Give yourself several weeks to get used to the band...Good
Luck! Kimberly

try things like ice chips. sugarfree pop cycles, measure your 64 oz of
water in a picture and set a timer to take a sip every 15 minutes. Chicken,
Beef m and Vegetable broth(low sodium. in your protein drinks. just get it
in.

As all of the posters said, it is important to keep sipping. I was told
that anything in liquid form is counted towards your rehydration amount.
So the protein shakes, the jello the fruit jc (while on liquid diet) were
all counted in. I use the sugar free popsicles daily and they also count.
Just keep sipping. I started w/ a shot glass that held 2 - 3 oz and used
that as a monitor and watched the clock. Then I marked a small glass with
a marker to 4 oz and would fill that up and know I had 1 hr to finish the 4
oz. It will get easier.

I too had trouble getting water in, I am 5 months out and loose count
occassionally with my water intake, but getting better at it. I just got
the Hydra Coach water bottle which makes the counting alot
easier.........and for my body weight it says I should get more in, but I
have it set to 64 oz per day as I also intake 16 oz a day of protien
shakes, so all in all I am intaking 80 oz, only 12 oz shy of what it says I
should be intaking for my weight.
