I had RNY just over 1 1/2 years ago and my boyfriend orders us a 6" and I eat 1/4 of it after throwing away most of the bread. You're only a few months out so it's going to depend on several factors. First of all does your surgeon allow you to eat bread yet? Bread wasn't on my list of things I could eat until I was 6 mos out. What about the ingredients in the sandwich? Are you allowed to eat them? As with any food look at the ingredients to decide if it is a food you will be able to eat.

Heavens no, you need to talk to your Dr. about what you can eat. I wasn't allowed any carbs until I lost 75% of my weight, and I still didn't eat carbs to speak of, but if I had anything, it was a very COMPLEX carb. I am at goal and having a problem with losing too much weight now, so I eat good carbs, i.e. oatmeal, whole grain crackers, and fruit. Good luck

That much bread is not a good idea. Bread can ball up and block your stoma - ouch! However, you can eat the insides of one if the contents are on your approved list of foods from your surgeon or NUT. Same eating rules apply here as well: protein first (meat), chewed very well, then the veggies, and no drinking before/after at least 30 min.

You know.... I'm with ya. I understand the yearning for stuff you used to eat. I look at the Subway sandwiches, or the Chipotle burritos, or the Whoppers with cheese and the Filets of Fish, and my mouth just waters. But... this procedure is a tool for us, a gift to help us learn to eat in a whole different way. I know that if I break down and try to eat one of those things, first off...I'll only be able to eat about 3 bites. Second, I'll have eaten a lot more carbs than protein (which is a big time no-no). So, I've learned that I can go into a Qdoba, and order a side of their pulled pork (it's the leanest thing on their menu) and have them put a little ladle of the 3-cheese queso on it, and I can eat about half and I'm satisfied. The same thing would be true with Subway, if I were to go into there. I would ask for the sandwich without the bread. They might look at me like I was crazy, but I'd much rather be losing weight by eating right, than eating the same stuff that made me into a 310 pound pre-op. I haven't even TRIED to go into a McDonalds or a Burger King....because I can't have anything that I like, so why torture myself? I have learned that I can go to Costco and buy a big bag of frozen, fully cooked chicken strips that I can just pull out a few and throw into the microwave, spritz with "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter" and season with my favorite seasoning, and have them along with a half a cup of fat free cottage cheese with a little bit of dry Hidden Valley Ranch ORIGINAL Buttermilk Dressing Mix stirred in for a savory flavor, or some Polaner Sugar-Free Strawberry Preserves with Fiber stirred in if I want something sweet. I've also learned that I can buy a bag of pre-cooked shrimp and have a cup of them for lunch with a couple of tablespoons of cocktail sauce (but I always check the ingredients and get the one with the least amount of sugar in it). I make a mean chicken or tuna salad - using about 5 ounces of meat, I add two chopped, hard-boiled eggs, one heaping tablespoon of dill relish, and 2 tablespoons of Best Foods Light Mayo. I either eat about 3 ounces of it alone, or on half of a whole wheat, double-fiber English Muffin, or on a brown rice cake that I found in the kosher foods section of a local King Soopers (I've never seen BROWN rice cakes)....or, I've even used whole wheat crackers or soy crisps to "scoop" it with. There are lots of ways to handle the cravings, and I hope you'll be able to beat yours.

I have done just what the previos poster said: I ordered a subway without the bread!!! They just put the meat etc into a small boat which I was only able to eat about half of that. Im not sure what foods are on your list as you are still early out, but the tuna is a good choice. Best of luck, and you could and should always check with your nutritionist first!

For me, the answer is a huge NO! I had WLS 11/08 and I still haven't added bread back into my diet. I am very leary of all starches and I read every label. My Dr. limits amy carbs to 30Gms/day. It was hard at first, but I am used to it now and don't miss the bread, pasta, potatoes, or desserts. I'm down 132#, and I won't do anything to sabatoge what is working for me. I can wear a seatbelt now, the steering wheel doesn't rub my belly anymore, I fit in my bathtub, and most of all, I love wearing a size 8! LOL* These are some of the things that keep me on track. On the other hand, my friend who had WLS 2/08, lost over 70# by the time I had my surgery and for some reason she got back her carb addiction and has now put on all of the weight she lost and even MORE! Her Dr. told her to get out of his office when she had 3 consecutive visits and had gained weight on each of them. Now she has an appliance in her body (LB) and no one will touch her for any adjustments! Being non-compliant will be in her medical history, and she will have to divuldge those records to get any treatment....if she decides to get back on track. I doubt her insurance will take the risk tho, and she will have to pay out-of-pocket. Tyania, talk this over with your Dr. before to add bread to your meals. It just might be the trigger that tips you over the other way.

Eating bread was allowed for us at about 3 months out, but I still rarely eat bread. If you got a sub you wouldn't be able to eat much if you ate the bread. At this point intime you should be eating around 2 ounces per meal. My clinic says 2 ounces until you reach goal weight ...and the success of my clinic's patients is high. But do talk to your nutritionist about whats best for you. Best of luck to you! hugs N God Bless, Kim
