Question:
pre-op diet
I am worried after reading everyone else is on a liquid only diet before their surgery because my doctor's pre-0p for RNY surgery is not a liquid diet. It's high protein meat, low fat, and 50-60 carbs a day. Does this sound normal to anyone else? I was fully expecting a liquid diet. — Lisa L. (posted on January 24, 2010)

well, the goal for the pre-op diet is to lose as much weight as you can so
that your liver shrinks and isnt in the way (as much) during surgery. most
doctors prefer the high protien liquid diet approach because it seems to
have the best weightloss. but technically you could lose weight the way
you are doing it. and i wish i could!! cause this liquid diet is killing
me!!

My doctor required us to lose weight prior to surgery, but did not specify
any kind of "diet". He had us work with his registered
dietician, and she laid out a program for us that had us eating much as we
would after surgery, just in larger amounts (high protein, low carbs, even
lower fat). I started the regime in October, and by March 2nd (the date of
my surgery), I had lost 27 pounds. My surgeon did not require a liquid
diet except for the day before surgery, nor any kind of bowel prep except a
laxative for the two nights prior to surgery. I was surprised, but
grateful that I didn't have to do two weeks of liquid diet - not sure I
could have made it.

I was lucky, I was on a semi liquid diet for 2 weeks. Two meals were
shakes or liquids and 1 high protein meal a day, I lost 9 pounds in that 2
weeks. This made it a lot easier. So your dr's pre op diet sounds great!
(I made the mistake of starting it before I was supposed to, so I was
misable after surgery as I was on liquids for SOOOO long)!! So I don't
recommend starting before your supposed to! My hubby had to do the liquid
for 1 week before surgery. He didn't even cheat!!

Every doctor is different and should always listen to what they say,
however, a liquid diet won't hurt you and will help you drop more! I lost
19 pre-op on 2 weeks liquid.
