Question:
need help buying groceries

I need help. My surgery is in 3 weeks and I want to have everything ready to eat when I come home. What should I buy? How many meals should I eat in a day? Any suggestions on what some of you may have done when you got home would help.    — cuppaloopy (posted on December 7, 2009)

Follow what your Surgeon will recommend. They'll give you a list. Don't go out and stock up now! Get some Broths (College Inn has a great White Wine flavor) and Creamy soups (V8 in the box is what I chose) for two weeks worth. Sugar Free Jello's and zero calorie drinks such as Crystal Light (Wal-mart has their own brand a lot cheaper) There were foods you liked before surgery but may not feel like have at all after surgery. Follow what your surgeon suggest!

You don't say what surgery you are having??? I purchased the protein chicken broth from Unjury and the protein. I also had plenty of SF popsickles and fudgesickles. SF pudding and jello. Just don't buy much when you move to the next diet phase you may not use/finish the stuff. Also Special K protien water packets or ready made are pretty good and G2 gatorade or the Zero powerade. I also purchased a Magic Bullet which I still use almost two years later. If you don't have one buy a cheap little timer, it will help later on to gauge your meals or when to start drinking after a meal. Good Luck,

I didnt like the clear broth's. I used bouillon cubes...so much more taste. They make them sugarfree too. Sugarfree fudgicles (spelling?) were awesome too

I had my gastric bypass on Nov 23. I was on a liquid diet 8 days before surgery. I bought things like chicken and beef stock. I bought sf popsycles and sf fudgescyles and sf puddings for after surgery but when I came home, I was on a liquid diet for 9 days before I went to where I am now on pureed foods. Do you have a magic bullit mixer? I use mine every day. Talk to your dr about all of the protein powders they recommend and I bought sf carnation instant breakfast and I still drink them 2xday for my protein. You need to be on your vit. and calcium now and start your b12 and bcomplex that we have to have everyday for the rest of our lives. Your drs office should be giving you phamplets with general food guidlines for before and after surgery. Now that im on pureed foods, I use the magic bullet and put the contents in icecubes and when they are frozen, I pop them into a large freezer bag and I just heat one up for my 3 meals a day. My drs said I can never snack and I only eat 3xday. Yest. I panseared a chicken breast(Im on pureed foods now). Put alittle fat free chicken gravy powder and some water and pureed it and put it in the icecubes so I have food for a while. Next week I get to go to soft foods and thats almost anything cooked(no salad)and chew, chew chew Suzette

I used a lot of chicken broth at first. Water of course. Later I ran the food in my processor. I also started with the protein shakes in skim milk. A few sips at a time and built up. Follow what your doctor/dietitian told U to do. Good luck.

The smart forme drinks are also good. They sold them at the hospital where I had surgery. They're fruit flavored (like crystal light) and have 15 gr. protein. I like the berry one. They have an orange that tastes just like tang, if you like tang. The other flavors were a little funky. I haven't tried it, but heard the cranberry was also good. Sometimes the shakes were just too thick for me right after surgery, but your surgeon or nutritionist should give you a pretty detailed list of do's and don't's. I also liked sf popsicles (the tropical ones were especially tasty;}) I just had my rny on oct 8, 2009. Also, I was more comfy sleeping in a recliner the first few nites, as laying flat in bed was uncomfortable. My dh also bought me a gross of disposable insulated cups (like what you'd get coffee in at a gas station or something) at Costco. Since you drink so slow, it keeps the hots hot and the colds cold, and cut down on dishes. I know it wasn't a green thing to do, but it sure was nice those first couple of weeks!
