Personally I feel its best to be on a liquid diet before surgery so you
know what you are going to be on for a few weeks after surgery.

My Doctor states it is to shrink the liver, making it easier to lift out of
the way when doing surgery. He said that the most painful incision is the
one that they make to lift the liver up and if the liver is shrunk properly
then there will be much less pain post op.

YOu need to be on the liquid diet to shrink your liver so the surgeon can
reach your intestines easier. It is hard to operate, when a huge fatty
liver is in the way. Oh, that is the other reason, because it is fatty.
They want to shrink the fat in it. So, if you ever watch "Big
Medicine" they tell all you will ever need to know about wls. But,
bottom line, the surgeon will have better success reaching your stomach,
(your stomach is right behind the liver) and the surgery will go much
better.

To cleanse your liver, so it is larger, so they can operate easier,
especially if you have your surgery laproscopically (SP).

Just a note: My surgeon said there have been times when the patient was in
the middle of the operation, but the surgeons had to discontinue due to the
large size of the liver. If it is too large, they can't get by it to
perform the surgery. You certainly don't want to go through all that just
to have to do it twice (not to mention the cost and insurance head aches).
I hope that encourages you to stick to your surgeon's advice. It's just
for a short while, and it IS worth it!

You really should ask that question of your surgeon. Every doctor is
different in how they handle their pre op and post op care!

My surgeon explained that it shrinks the fat around the liver, which makes
it easier for them to see what they're doing and essentially makes it a
much easier and safer operation. In addition, he wanted to see that I could
follow the instructions pre-op to be assured that I would stick to the
rules post-op.

My doc does not require the pre op liquid diet but he does require you lose
steady through the months prior to surgery for the same purpose. Shrinking
the liver (and being healthy).
