Question:
COLON CLEANSING
I AM FIVE YEARS OUT OF OPEN RNY. I HAVE A FIBER BASED QUICK CLEANSE KIT TO DETOX MY LIVER, INTESTINES, AND OVERALL GENERAL BETTER COLON HEALTH. THE SYSTEM THAT I HAS REQUIRES YOU TO DRING 8 GLASSES OF WATER WITH IT EACH DAY UNTIL YOU ARE FINISHED WITH THE PROGRAM. SUPPOSEDLY, THE WATER IS WHAT ACTIVATES THE NATURAL FIBER AND CAUSES THE DETOX TO WORK. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW IF THIS IS SAFE. I HAVE NEVER HAD A SICK DAY SINCE MY SURGERY, HAVE LOST 170 POUNDS AND FEEL GOOD BUT SOMETIMES SLUGGISH MY FRIEND SAYS THAT A DETOX WOULD DO WONDERS. HELP!!!! ERIC A. First I need to say that I am Pre-WLS, so don't know how it will effect
someone with an RNY.
I do a detox about every 6 months, sounds similar to what you are talking
about. Some of the kits are easier on your system than others. I use one
that is a two week cleanse, no stomach and intestinal cramping as it works
more slowly than some out there. It has herbs and fiber to clear out the
liver and such, and recommends that you eat a 'clean' diet, fruits,
veggies, lean chicken and fish, and LOTS of water. The water helps to
activate the fiber and keep from getting bound up from it and to flush out
the toxins.
As with most all things, I would suggest checking with you doctor prior to
doing this to see what his/her recommendation is.
Good luck!

Any time you are considering changing your diet from the guidelines your
surgeon has given you, be sure to explain what you are considering to him.
Somethings that are safe or even beneficial to a person who has not has WLS
may not be a good idea, or may even be unhealthy for someone who has had
WLS.
