Question:
How do you tolerate 64 oz of fluids each day?
I am 7 weeks post op rny gastric bypass, and I am unable to tolerate 64 oz of fluids each day. I get really full fast when I drank liguids? I have been dehydrated once already and don't want to go down that road again. Almost everything I try to drink is to sweet so I am really stuck with drinking water all day. Is there anything anyone drinks that works really well to get all the fluids each day they need? Please help.. thanks in advance! — mriles (posted on July 8, 2009)

Hi Monica, It seems to take time to get use to getting so much down..but
we have to! I am 1yr out from RNY...sip..sip sip. I use liq protein
drinks, along with adding sugar free powders to my water. I have a coffee
protein drink I use also. How about popcicles (sugarfree of course). Best
of luck to you!

i spend most of my awake time holding a water bottle and sipping it except
1/2 hour before i eat and 1 hour after i eat. and then i sip, sip sip
until a half hour before i know i'm going to eat again. i pretty much plan
what i'm going to eat and when. i figure this is just part of life now. i
messed myself up by developing horrendous eating habits and not exercising.
this is what i have to do to get back good health.

Hi ! You sound just like I did at the time. I had to find a protein powder
that wasn't sweetened,,,I found unjury unflavored and mixed it with plain
water, But found later that I liked it in milk, now a days if a have one,
I mix it to nestles flavored water. It definately took a few drinks to get
used to it..To drink crystal light etc, I used to take two bottles mix the
crys light into one and then pour half into the other bottle then fill both
the rest of the way with water. The sweeteners were just too much. I also
found that splenda was more tolerable than nutra sweet for me. You may be
having a hard time with one particular type also. I was dehydrated for 3
weeks..make sure you aren't still..I had no tears in the a.m. etc..no
weight loss while dehydrated..bummer. sometimes I had to hold my timer set
for 30 seconds and take a sip every time it went off. The things we do/did
to get our fluids in...if the fluids are filling you...could you be
drinking too big of sips? try taking smaller ones...just a teaspoon at a
time. try heating up some v-8 with your favorite spaghetti seasonings in
it..I used to add a lil garlic and blk pepper..heat it and use a spoon to
drink it. If you can do that without feeling full, then maybe you are
drinking too much at a time. I only felt full right after surgery while I
still had all the gas in there. Once I started burping etc, I felt pretty
good..that was day 3-4 for me. Best of luck to you! Hugs, Kim

I might have an small answer, I found Special K protein water. It comes in
Pink Lemonade and Iced Tea. I try to drink some of this and the reat
Crystal lite. And just like someone else suggested I have sugarfree
popsicles which help alot when it is hot out. Good luck ~Patti~

I found Nestle's Flavor Splash (I find it sometimes at Albertsons, Safeway
and now and then I can special order it from King Soopers). Also, Aquafina
Flavor Splash. They are only slightly sweetened, fruit flavored clear
water drinks with 0 calories, 0 carbs, 0 protein....some sodium. They
aren't as sweet as Crystal Light, but I did find that I like Crystal Light
Immunity on the Go Cherry Pomegranate flavor quite a lot. Also, just in
case you didn't know, Benefiber has now come out with it's own flavored
"on the go" packets - in Strawberry Kiwi - just like Crystal
Light, but you're getting double the benefit - you're adding undetectable
fiber to your diet, and it really tastes good!

Early on, I found that hot drinks went down a lot better for me. I drank a
lot of hot decaf tea. Drinking gets easier as you go along but it's still
something I have to be very intentional about.

I LOVE Sobe Lifewater. It's 0 calorie in interesting fruit flavors. I add 2
packets of equal to make it sweeter but you might like it as is. Pear/fuji
apple is my favorite! I sip on them all day long.

I also found that the drinks were too sweet and so instead of putting a
stick in 16 oz of water I put it in 48 and it tastes much better.
I can now get in all my liquids much better.

Sip Sip Sip, I drink way more than 64 oz a day and I just sip all day. I
also cant stand the taste of plan water anymore so I use Crystal Lite. And
get creative with mixing the different flavors together, it makes it fun
and easier to get it all down. Hope this helps

After surgery I could not stand the SF sweeteners or plain water either!
So it was quite a challenge for me as well...But I found that luke warm or
room temp water was MUCH easier to drink...and I got a water filter to get
rid of any weird water tastes...Water had a metalic or swimming pool smell
that just gagged me! My fridge has a filter as well and that helped me
SOOOOO much! I carry a large bottle or 32oz cup of water with me
everywhere...Sometime I use a 64 oz pitcher...I fill it first thing daily
and work on drinking that all day or I take along a 32 oz glass if I am out
of the house or bottles of water (in stores) and i try to drink one before
lunch and one after dinner! BUT...if you just drink enough that your urine
is a nice clear color and not dark...you are getting enough fluids! 64 oz
is only a suggestion and many of us do not need all that much because we
get enough fluids in foods as well as liquids...The color of your urine is
enough to tell you how well you are doing! But it really helps me if the
water is filtered well...I can't drink some bottled water...It actually
gives me a belly ache or stomach spasms if it is too cold! And some sf
sweeteners I seem to not tolerate well at all! So I use Stevia and have no
trouble with it...I like Propel water too because it has electrolytes and
no sugar..I often buy the power Propel and mix in my own filtered water! I
make it less sweet as well...Some of the sf drinks are sickening sweet!
YUCK! I LOVE green tea as well! I found a powder Green tea by
"Stash" (http://shopstashtea.com/31130.html) that I just love...I
put in a packet of lemon crystals or lemon juice and a packet of stevia
sweetener and it goes down so much better than any other drink! Of course I
am now years PO and can drink easily now...but I had the same issues as you
early on and I have to tell you that it does get easier!
