Question:
I am 3 weeks post op

I am eating meats very slowly now. Can I eat a hot dog? Sunday is my Fathers BBQ and I didn't know if that is something I can have...no bun just the meat.    — MyOrchids (posted on June 18, 2009)

Oh my, I was still in the liquid-thick liquid phase at three weeks. I can't believe you are attempting to eat meat so soon after surgery. Your stomach (pouch) hasn't even healed yet. It has healed only a small amount. Just be careful you don't get the meat stuck. And remember, you just had a major surgery, to altar your stomach, so be gentle to it. I can't say that is a good thing to eat meat so soon, but let's just see what the other members have to say. It just worries me. You also should check with your doctor about that one. best wishes to you, I will follow up on the posts from others to see what they tell you.

You may encounter unnecessary stricture of your stomach and intestine at the surgery site if you eat things before you are supposed to. A young man at our support group has had to have 3 endoscopes to remove the food stuck, because he insisted on eating things too early. You are having a serious procedure that I am sure you want to be successful. Its the same with them telling you not to drink soda? it is for reason. Or to not eat sugar because of dumping syndrome. You should be able to call your doctor office anytime you have any questions like this/ I also hope you have an support group that you can attend to share ideas and listen to other surgery patients stories, successes, and problems they have encountered. It really helped me alot with doing even better with my Preop Diet and SLOWING Down with chewing my food and drinking my water. take care!

I am the one that posted this question. Just so everyone knows I was told by my dr to eat meat. SOFT meat, very small portions. I am on the soft food part of my diet. I have 1 more week then they want me to move on to other foods. I eat very slowly and so far I don't have issues with my food. So far the only meat I have had is very tender chicken, and pork. But not a lot, my portions are very small. But again this is what I was told to do. Just wanted to let you all know.

Hi Heather, I had my RNY one year ago on July 2nd. I still cannot comfortably eat sausage, hot dogs, bologna, etc. I can eat hot chili, meatballs, Just got back from a friend seafood dinner with Catfish, Oysters, and jumbo shrimp. I love hot peppers and strong coffee, and eat any kind of beef, pork, chicken, turkey, or seafood. Shrimp is from heaven. Sweets never bothered me from day one. The day of the surgery I had a bite of apple cobbler after I awoke. I have a lot of trouble drinking or eating dairy products, fried eggs, (but I do), peanut butter, and bread. Tomatoes are about my favorite food. and Cheese? Wow! But processed utility meats? They aren't good for people with untouched stomachs. Pickled feet lips, hocks etc are even easier on my stomach. Bottom line? Can you? maybe. You have to walk YOUR walk. Something working for me might not for you. You might be able to eat things I can only drool at. Just know that being ABLE to doesn't mean that you should. Damage you do might sabotage the effectiveness of your surgery, or even risk your life. What ever you do, chew chew chew and savor every nuance of flavor before you swallow any meat. Good luck on your journey. Dusty @};-

My Dr. talked me to start eating chicken and turkey etc. At my two week check up. I had open RNY May 26th. Each person is different. What one person does may or may not work for another. We are all on the journey although the journey may be of the same kind it is different for everyone. Try not to pass judgement on others because they wish to try something you may not. Just be careful. Have a great day.

OMG - 3 weeks post op and already eating pork!!! I was told by my nutritionist and my doctors that this would be added way on down the line, next to beef, if that is added at all. All I have been able to handle confortably has been tender chicken and fish, mostly fish! All I can add is becareful!

Well... like it was said in the previous posts... people are different, and so are their surgeons. I was only two weeks out when I had the sushi chef at my favorite restaurant fix me about an ounce of scallops, chopped very fine, with just a tad bit of mayo and some masago (smelt roe), and it went down so smoothly. It is what my PA calls "slider food". I have also eaten a Hebrew National 97% Fat Free Frank, but I think I was a little bit farther out than you are now. I just made sure to chew it really, really well. And I don't think I was able to eat the whole thing, either. But I know it didn't hurt me. Anyways... you want to do all you can to avoid stricture, which has happened to me. So, if you have any doubt in your mind at all... you should probably check with your surgeon or your nutritionist. I hope you have a nice time at the BBQ!

I am almost 3 years post op lap RNY. I have been able to eat hot dogs (the skin is sometimes a problem if its grilled so I just peel it off and eat the inside). No bun of course. I was actually able to eat them boiled early on. I think you should just try it - if it works - good. Everyone is different. Don't be afraid to try things. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Just take it slow. You'll know if you body is not accepting it.

I could NOT handle a hot dog at three weeks post op...I think you are asking for problems just from the fat content alone...This could cause you some serious dumping in the most undesireable of ways! (What some call "sharts" sh*t farts) Classy, I know but that's the term! I didn't make it up! LOL... That along with vomiting or at least an upset pouch! You would probably do better taking a nibble of hamburger instead and chewing REALLY REALLY well. If you can bring your own food at this point that would be best...I could NOT eat a hotdog for many years post op...Now I can handle one if it's all there is to choose from...I don't fuss so much about food after 5 years and just a few weeks ago I was faced with hot dogs as my only protein choice and it didn't bother me...tasted awful though...I used to like them....but now all I taste is the fat and unnatural flavor and it made me just a little sick to the pouch! At 3 weeks post op, I was eating tablespoons of pureed liquid meat! (yummy visual, huh?) The fat/cholestreol from egg yolks made me dump and ache...I could not even imagine what a hot dog would do! Too fatty and lots of preseravtives and "junk" in those things!! I'd rather eat the bun! For real!

How about taking turkey or chicken hot dogs there for them to cook for you. They are lower in fat and cholesteral and may agree with your tummy better since you are able to eat tender chicken. I've had VSG and sometimes hot dogs don't agree with me, but every one is different. I can usually eat turkey dogs with no problems though. Just a thought. I hope you have a great time at your dads with no problems.

I would just take it a bite at a time..chew very slowly and then don't take another bite for about 10-15 minutes to see if you start feeling really sick. I had 2 small meatballs about 2 weeks after my surgery and a couple of cucumber slices at a family get-together (superbowl party) lol, and did fine. Every person is different and if you feel like you can eat it, then I say go for it. Your body will let you know if you have overdone it. It maybe painful, but it will be a learning experience.

Every one is different. I (4 months out) could and can eat anything as long as I chew it to a paste before swallowing. After all, if you chew it to mush before you swallow, it's pretty much like the baby/soft food you are supposed to be on now anyways. You're your own person, decide for yourself. If it turns out to make you not feel well, then you'll know to not try it again. Just make sure to chew it to mush first.

I agree with Lisa and Sandy. Each one of us are different, but one the same journey. I had my Lap on April 1st. I had my first chicken hotdog on June 3rd, while on vacation with my kids. I did it without the bun, and had my dill relish, mustard etc. I took small bites and chewed well. All went well and my kids were thrilled that I was eating the same thing the did. 2 mights later I had m first grilled hamberger and all went well. While I did not loose any weight on a 2 week vacation, for the first time in the 50 years I can remember ( I'm 56) I did not gain any weight. And I really though I would havel. Just add foods gradually you'll findout what you can and can't eat. Like I can't eat watermelon cramps my tummy and I used to live on it during the summer months. God Bless and good luck on you new life and journey.
