Question:
What happens if someone skips a stage of the post op diet?

I do not plan on skipping any stages but I am curious.    — cxperr01 (posted on May 4, 2009)

I'm no doctor, but I'm guessing it could range anywhere from damaging your pouch to making you incredibly sick...and could even be extremely dangerous, too. You've got to baby that new pouch of yours. The surgery is very tough on your stomach/pouch and it must heal. The stages get old real quick, but it's definitely necessary that you stay within the guidelines. It seems complicated now, but your body will be your guide as you go along. Just use common sense and you'll be fine. But those first few weeks are critical as far as following doctors orders. Good luck!

Guessing as the first poster did is not very fair to those of us who didn't do some stages as the majority seem to do... (Unless you try to eat as you did pre op with no specific training, yes you could hurt yourself)...Otherwise, my surgeon didn't do liquid stages except of the first day after my RNY...when I had a thick 4 oz strawberry protein shake ...later I ate cottage cheese and applesauce in the hospital (as an example)...and when I got home from the hospital a few days later, I had 2 T roast chicken breast w/broth ,1 T mashed potatoes and 1 T mashed carrots for dinner! (all pureed separately) ...I was also trained by my surgeons team on how eat properly. I had ZERO complications...No dumping...no vomiting, nothing stuck or ripped or torn or damaged...I didn't even have any plateaus that lasted more than a few days...and I lost and kept off 150 lbs for the last 5 years...I recommend you follow YOUR doctors rules...My surgeon took great care and personal one on one training to teach each of his patients how to eat and live long term RNY. I was assigned a Registerd Dietician who checked my purchases and made sure I had the right type of vitamins, protein powder, and weeks worth of menu and vitamin schedules all made out...She checked every bottle of vitamins...every meal menu...and the protein to make sure it included the right amino acids and no added vitamins etc! I still had minor rules that you all have as well...but I ate soft/pureed foods Day 1 after surgery day...NOT ALL SURGEONS do liquid stages. HOWEVER, you must do what your surgeon wants you to do. He operated on you and only he can tell you how he wants you to eat...and how he prepared you for those stages...He has his opinion based on his surgery skills and so you WANT to do what makes HIM comfortable for your own safety!! My surgeon is a WELL SEASONED WLS surgeon with several thousand RNY surgeries under his belt...He is confident in his skills and his classes...as well as his patients after they have been trained in long term RNY maintenance...I had a very good experience, and I also followed MY surgeons rules...Not anyone elses and not from celebrity WLS To-Do books...There are more than one way of eating after surgery...that doesn't make ANY single way, the ONLY or the BEST way for all...It's between you and your surgeon! You do what your surgeon wants and I am sure he doesn't want you to skip any stages he has set for you...UNLESS you talk to him FIRST and get approval or modification to the stages if you feel you are ready to move faster! Otherwise, darlin'...you could hurt yourself if you aren't prepared/ready/trained properly etc!! Hope that helps! Good luck!
