I'd wait, it's going to be tough to handle the rice for a while. just have some MISO soup while your friends are doing sushi...it's warm and healthy!

I personally could not eat rice (ANY RICE not even a few grains or pasta) for well over a year. They got horribly stuck and swelled in my pouch! Plus trying to chew that seaweed into liquid mush just grosses me out thinking about it! It's so fishy tasting! I still chew my food at 5 years out, but it doesn't need to be chewed to liquid anymore as it did the first year! LOL If I were you, I wouldn't even attempt it for at least 3 months...AT LEAST! Plus the soy sauce might make you swell at this stage...And what about the wasabi? Oh boy! That might burn! The ginger would be nice on the pouch though! LOL. ...I love sushi..I eat it now during the maintenance stage, but for a new post op...I just do not see this as a food you want to try again right away, to be honest...You need to focus on protien and eating style...and that's too complicated a food in the early stages...Lose your weight first! Then slowly try your favorites after you've healed and graduated in a year and lost all your weight...Just an opinion...

I also love sushi, but I have already been told that I may need to plan on never having it again because of the problems with white rice having the potential to cause big problems. I have no doubt that you are definitely not ready for it at just 3 weeks. My suggestion is to wait until you have fully adjusted to your surgery (I didn't notice if you had band or bypass surgery).

LOL - Sushi is one of my favorite meals. In fact, my partner and I have a standing Sushi date every Friday, and sometimes in between. By three weeks, my partner felt like there was this big hole in her life, because I couldn't gou out for sushi with her any more, so we tried this. I went with her, prepared with my "regular" soft food and protein drink, which I kept in a lunch bag on the floor. My favorite was the scallop hand roll, but of course, I can't have rice or stuff like that, so I tried this.... I had the chef chop up one large scallop so much that it was almost mush, then add a dollop of mayo and some smelt eggs, and it came to about 2/3's of a one ounce cup. I used my baby spoon and took tastes off the tip of it. It just melted in my mouth. I didn't even have to chew it. It was delicious and I was purring by the time I was finished. It took me as long to eat that little container and drink my IsoPure as it took my partner to eat her two handrolls and one regular roll. But I was happy. The owner of the restaurant says that they can do the same thing for me for almost any fish there, from yellowtail to tuna... and I can just eat the fish without the rice or seaweed. Hey, pure protein... how can you argue with that?? They also say that later on, they can make me special rolls without rice - instead, using a small amount of fat-free, low carb cream cheese to hold the meat in the nori (when I can eat the nori). Our sushi place just bends over backward for us... and I'm really glad. Now, when I go, I order two orders of the scallops, one to eat there, and one to take home for the next day. YUM!!
