Question:
I am a Type II Diabetic - worried about pre-surgery diet.

Did any of you who are Diabetic have any problems with low blood sugar during the two week pre-surgery liquid only diet? I will be starting the diet soon and am concerned about possible low spells. Any advise? Thanks so much!    — icantweight (posted on March 16, 2009)

I had some problems with low blood sugar. I had a 42 when I went to the hospital and had to give me glucose before they would do the surgery. I had to take a piece of candy several times during my preop diet. I was on a low carb high protien for 5 days then 2 days of liquids. You may need to adjust your nightime medication.

Dear Theresa: I found that it was the complete opposite for me. If you drink alot of fruit juice, it is so high in sugar that my blood sugars actualy were higher, but the dr. said not to worry about it as it was a short time. I say wait and see how your body responds and go with it. If its high don't worry about it, if its too low do what the previous person advised you. I had the Gastric Bypass DS in Michigan, and just for your information, ever since my surgery in June 2007, I have not had to take insulin, or meds to control my diabetes. In fat my levels are so good, I feel like I'm not even diabetic anymore. Of course I watch my sugar and fat intake, but have not had any problems. GOOD LUCK on this journey you are about to take.

I had no problem with blood sugars. I monitored it closely, but only had 1 low that was wasy to remedy. I, too, have had no insulin since surgery. I was on a pump before surgery and getting huge amounts of insulin. I take a reading every morning, but in 3 months have seldom been over 130, usually around 120. My physician says I don't need to come back for diabetic care anymore!

You may have to monitor your sugar more often during pre-op diet and possibly for a while after your WLS; when in doubt ask you PCP, nutritionist, and or your surgeon. Take you vitamins, and drink your water too, since they will be a part of your new found life style post-op; best of luck and take your time and enjoy your journey. Best wishes for a healthier life.

i'm not diabetic but have always had trouble with low blood sugars... but had no problem with pre or post diets. I think the easily digestible protein isolate in the protein drinks helps to keep the blood sugar even. I used Isopure or BioChem.

This is most certainly a possibility. You may need to decrease or discontinue your diabetic medication. Please call your doctor. Best of luck to you.
