Question:
Is it normal to gain weight??
HI. I am 7 weeks post-op open rny. I usually weigh myself once a week. I weighed myself this morning and the scale said I have gained 2 pounds. NOw, I have been doing everything I am suppose to. The only thing I can think of is that I did not do as much excersice last week as I normally do. But this shouldnt make me gain weight. I eat between 600-800 calories daily. I take in about 70 grams of protein, and close to 100 oz of calorie free liquid. Is this normal? — jackie L. (posted on February 17, 2009)

I don't think it is "normal" to gain weight during the first
year...BUT, it is normal to have fluctations from water retention for
certain. But water is not a weight gain... You don't really have to worry
about 2-3 lbs...It's usually temporary for a few days...Try drinking more
water so your body doesn't need to "store" water. Staying
hydrated will usually prevent water retention. You didn't gain any
weight...when you start gaining 5 -6 pounds, you can bet you are gaining
weight! You are fine! Drink up!

It is water and try adding lemon or lime fresh into your water to flush out
the water. Excerise every day -30 minutes to 1 hour walking ...You are
doing great.

In the beginning of your journey the fluctuation is going to happen. Try
weighing yourself once a month. It is so gratifying to see the big number
loss rather than the weekly loss. I weighed myself monthly and it was very
rewarding. 5 years out, I still weigh myself monthly to stay on track.

Your doing fine. Just remember your doing everything right, it is just your
body adjusting. If your not doing anything wrong it will come off. This is
a process, just keep up the good work and don't do the scale thing. It can
drive you a little crazy...Good Luck

Don't weigh yourself every week!! Your weight will fluctuate for different
reasons so don't drive yourself crazy. It's more fun to wait until you go
to the doctor and find you've lost 60 pounds! I didn't even weigh myself
until recently and I'm 2 years post op. Someone gave you the advise to make
sure you're drinking a lot of water and I agree with that. Water is the
clue but don't drink during a meal as you probably know.

I agree with the folks how say don't worry. That weight is going to melt
away. You are doing great. Keep drinking, and keep up with the protein.
Write EVERYTHING you take in down and keep it to review with your
nutritionist and for yourself.
Happy Journey!
