Hi. I have found that Biotene mouthwash/spray is helpful for dry mouth. It's over-the-counter (Walmart, etc.). See if your surgeon will allow you to use it after surgery. If nothing else, you can rub the inside of your mouth with a damp washcloth. Good luck. Blessings, Mary

Hi Deborah, You should ask your health care provider first, but I have used Evening Primrose Oil [I break open the capsule & put it on my tongue - it is tasteless] for years. It helps lubricate your skin & completely prevents dry mouth for me. Good luck! -Barbara W.

Hi, I thought I was going to have the same problem since I'm also on medication that gives me dry mouth. Someone on one of the threads suggested to bring chap stick to the hospital with you and said it helps. I bought Burts Bees lip gloss and it was great. My mouth was still dry until they gave me ice but it helped keep my lips moist. It's a skinny tube and costs about $5 but I used it constantly and as I said it helped not feel so dry. I still use it.

Hospitals have these little swabs for this very purpose, usually lemony. Tell your nurses about the situation when you check in, just prior to surgery, and BE SURE to let your doctor know as well so that either the nurses or the doctor enters it on your chart. Otherwise, ask for a mouth swab when you need it.

Drink, drink, drink, drink... that will help both with dry mouth and weight loss. But it will also make you pee, pee, pee, and pee. :) Sucking on ice is good too, but chewing it isn't good for your teeth. Sugar free hard candy or gum... especially ones with xylitol. Sugar alcohols can cause gas/diarrhea in some people, so be aware. Mouth moisturizers... these usually come as a liquid, gel, or spray. Most are unflavored and disgusting. The most common ones are made by Biotene and I don't recommend them. Flavored ones taste better to me... my favorite is TheraSpray (vanilla mint) made by 3M. ************ If you've got dry mouth, oral hygiene is extremely important. I never had a cavity until I started having dry mouth and now almost every tooth has one. Make sure you a brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. A fluoride rinse, like ACT, is a good idea too. Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol as they will make the dryness worse (this includes listerine and scope). If you want to use a mouthwash, Biotene is good or look for one that is made for dry mouth. I've tried tons of dry mouth products, so if you have questions about anything specific, feel free to email me. Goodluck.
