Question:
Aetna and 6 mth supervised diet
I have Aetna POS in Kentucky and I have to do the 6 mth supervised diet. I have went to my physician July, August, September so that means I have 4 more to go.....but i have been going to WW since Feb. Has anyone had to do this and gotten approved before finishing the diet plan? I can do the diet plan but just curious......... — sadiebelle (posted on September 24, 2008)

I have BCBS of Michigan and WW counts as supervised diet as long as you
have their books that show when you went. They normally have to be
consecutive months.

I have BCBS of Illinois and in my policy it says WW is acceptable but when
my surgeons office sent in my chart and all the applicable stuff for
approval, the WW booklet with my weight history for sept of 07 - march of
2008 was included but they rejected it because they didnt feel it was
supervised enough. I in turn had to do 6 months with my nutrionist to meet
the 6 month supervised diet requirement. I have 1 more appt to go then they
resubmit. I think you might want to call your insurance carrier just to be
sure WW is good enough cause I would hate to see you go through what I did
and had to wait additional months.

Aetna is VERY specific about the 6 month plan. I have not known them to
approve prior to completion and the 6 months have to be documented and
consecutive. If you visit Aetna.com you can read the requirements. Hope
this helps!

I too have Aetna in Ky. I had two choices. I could either do the six
months with my primary care physician or the three month surgical prep
program with the hospital I am having surgery at. I chose the latter.
From what I was told, the only way to satisfy that criteria is either the
six month supervised with your pcp or the three month with the hospital.

If you want to go look at Aetna's complete policy on this type of surgery
it is policy 0157. It is pretty lengthy but it tells you everything in
detail.
