Question:
Do you have no desire to eat?

I have no desire to eat most days. I have to force myself to eat when my stomach starts to hurt. I will take a few bites of something and then want to stop. Anyone else experience this? I am concerned b/c I know I am not getting in my required protein each day. I try the protein supplements at times (Carnation Instant Breakfast - No Sugar added) but I just hate to eat. Any suggestions?    — Renee T. (posted on August 28, 2008)

I am with you, I am 10 months out and I still don't like to eat. When I first had surgery though, I did force myself to get my protein in but now if I eat, I eat, if not, then so be it. I am on my way to see my doctor now so we'll see if I'm doing any harm by not eating. I'm 120 lbs down though so something must be working.

Basically I think in order for the WLS to work then this is pretty much the way you feel about food. I'm 8 months out and I can eat more now but in the beginning, yes, a couple bites and I couldn't eat anymore. That's why it's important to a. take your vitamins, b. the few bites you DO eat need to be protein..c...try to get protein in drinkable forms as they won't fill you up as much.

I'm 3 days post op and I have no desire to eat either. I am hoping it will get better. For now I am sucking on ice chips and trying to stay hydrated. How far out are you? If you are more than a month I would call my dr.

I am a little over 2 years post op. All of you are perfectly normal. I remember my son telling me for at least the first 8-12 months 'You don't look like you ENJOY eating any more,' and saying that it looked like I was being punished when I was eating. As you progress, you will rely a little less on the protein drinks and learn to eat 'real' food better...but in the meantime, when you're having trouble just eating in general...at least make sure you're drinking your fluids AND your protein drinks. If you don't like the chocolatey/strawberry thicker ones, try the juice-type ones...they are all available in 'sample' packs so you can find what you like w/o having to buy a huge canister to find out it gives you the shudders to even think of drinking it. Look on line at vitalady.com or bariatriceating.com or unjury.com. Hang in there and keep pushing at least the protein and water. It does get better.

Just get in your protein, (food or drink), vitamins, water and exercise....because all too soon your appetite comes back and soooooo does hunger...

Isn't it the strangest thing after being addicted to food and obese and hear ourselves say things like "I don't like to eat", or "I forgot to eat lunch today"? I never thought I would ever hear myself say things like that. I don't like the sight of large amounts of food either. If someone has a huge platter of food, or a huge buffet, or if someone is eating really quickly and making a lot of mouth noises.... it makes me sick. Our relationship really does need to completely change after WLS and I think this is what is happening with you. Having said that, getting in your protein is not optional. If you can't eat it, can you find a protein shake you like? Do you like the protein puddings? I absolutely love them. Probably as time goes by, you will be able to eat a little more and may even get some appetite back. In the meantime... keep us posted here and ask questions. Also, call your nutritionist/surgeon and ask for suggestions as well. Good luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I am 9 months post op (rny 11/07) and i felt the same way you do. I hated the protein drinks, and the thought about drinking all the ounces gave me a stomach ache! I actually went into dehydration, just make sure that you are drinking, and some of the protein shakes i have had, are the Unjury, and the one from Curves (not sure if you have one out by you) I hated the heavy shake taste, so I would mix 16ozs of low fat milk with ice, and drink that, not feelinf like eating is a normal feeling, don't beat yourself up over it, just make sure that you are drinking and getting protein, you may want to call your dietician/doctor possibly they may have some ideas. Just taking a few bites and feeling full, is also normal, i am not sure how far you are post op. But, I still feel this way sometimes too! Good Luck to you.

I am almost 2 months since I had the surgery. The first few weeks were like that for me. I do get a little hungry now but I only ever eat lunch and dinner. I still can't get my protien shakes in cause I am so full. I never snack. Sometimes I will eat just 2 or 3 bites and be full of dinner. I don't look at food the same way anymore. And I can't stand how fast and how much my husband eats though I know I was like that at one point in my life. You are not alone in your battle but it will get better.
