Question:
I'm 1 week post op rny. I have gas soo bad. I feel like I'm tootin' off all the time.

Will this lessen or go away. I know some others who have mentioned this.    — JODI_13 (posted on July 28, 2008)

Totally Natural!!..Don't worry it will pass...LOL..I had it too. It's because when they do the surgery, they fill you with some type of air or gas to blow your stomach up, so they can see what they are doing during surgery. It will get better..atleast for me it did.

It takes time, but don't add to it by sucking wather through a straw or swallowing a lot of air. Walking also help burp some of it up.

I am 4 weeks out today and my gas just started to subside....I still get it when I eat many dairy based items in one day...lactaid is supposed to help...I was told by my surgeon that the intestines are writhing around trying to find a place to end up and once the swelling goes down and everything settles it should get better...it made sense and I have less gas the past 4 days than all month.... I am also starting on soft solid food and it is helping...

Walking early post op is the best way to get rid of that gas build up. Gas-X strips you put on your tongue and dissolve work great too. What you are experiencing is perfectly normal and should get better every day. Good luck, Dawn

This is totally natural. It is because of the gas that they blew into your abdomen to help them see during the surgery. It is slowly diffusing through your intestines. Walking will help it diffuse faster. Be patient, it should be getting better soon.

It is better to toot and feel the shame than not to toot and feel the pain.... : ) It'll get better...walk around...get it all out!

Funny, I had been wondering about this today! I had heard so much about gas, but I have not had that problem at all! I think I had more gas before the surgery ... And I haven't had a migraine - which I had been having almost weekly for about six months, some of which lasted a week! - since my surgery. The body sure is a strange instrument, isn't it?

I am 3 yrs post op RNY. I live with Maalox for Gas pressure. But I was this way prior to surgery too, but I feel dependent upon it now. I find that after a meal out, I choose, though not recommended to have a few sips of soda. This helps me eliminate the pressure quickly. Belch and Toots away!

"Totally Natural!!..Don't worry it will pass..." and pass and pass and ... . I'm just over 2 yr. past R-N-Y and my passing gas has not abated. I expect it never will -- even for YOU. It's just the price we have to pay for better health, better mobility, and a better outlook on life in general. Learn to live with it 'cause it probably ain't gonna go away -- EVER.
