Question:
Is 15 pounds 3 weeks post-op lap RNY "normal"?
I am 3 weeks post-op RNY and have only lost 15 pounds so far. Is this normal/average? I probably should not weigh myself everyday because I am also seeing up then down fluctuations. — collinsmom (posted on June 10, 2008)

I am also 3 weeks post -op RNY and have only lost 15 pounds. It is very
hard not to weigh yourself every day. I have been told that this is normal
that the body has to get use to the new stomach. So I wait. I thought to
myself, Boy I hope I didn't have this surgery to lose only 15 pounds!!!!
But I know it has to come off it is just a matter of time. I am losing
inches.

You are doing great! Stop worrying. If you keep to the diet, exercise and
drink loads of water, the pounds will start to roll off again. DON'T GET
WEIGHED MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK, SAME TIME EACH WEEK. Stressing over weight
can help hold on to the pounds. Lyn

You all are doing great! Weighing every day is hard not to do. But you
will be much happier and see the bigger picture if you do weigh once a
week. Or at least every three days at the most. Remember, it takes a good
year...If you lost 8.4 lbs a month over the next year. you will lose 100
lbs. You have lost 15 lbs in 3 weeks... Just keep doing what you are
doing...because it's working! :)

Someone at a support group we attend made a great statement. She said
"look at the non-scale victories". The scale is not always the
best indicator of how you are doing. But it seems like you are doing great.

You are all doing great! DO NOT WEIGH MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK. I now weigh
every Monday morning - same circumstances each time - and that helps a lot.
Your body weight goes up and down all week - and that can be discouraging.
I know it's hard to not weigh every day but you're messing with your head
if you do that! Keep up the good work!

Why are we so hard headed????? We know we feel worse when we get on the
scale, yet we continue to do it to our own detriment. I am 4 weeks out and
have weighed once. I have decided that I have to be content with the
knowledge that I am doing all I am supposed to be doing and that my clothes
are getting bigger on me. What the scale would say should not matter.
There is an obvious rearranging of the pounds going on with my body because
my donation pile of clothes is 5 times more than the amount of clothes I
have left to wear or get into over the next couple of months. There is
water retention in the first week or two after surgery from swelling and
the IV fluids and God forbid you get bloating for a menstrual cycle...
there is a few pounds there. Don't get so caught up in the numbers. Trust
yourself that you are doing your best and rest in knowing it will happen
and you are getting healthier with each passing day. Don't be so hard on
yourself. Find your victories in a looser fitting shirt, underwear that
rest higher on my waist than they use to, a chair not cutting into your
legs. For me a great victory is the thermostat on our home AC is now 2
degrees warmer than it was pre op and I am not sweating as much while at
rest. STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALE AND ENJOY YOUR NEW FOUND FREEDOM!!!!!!!!
