Question:
5 weeks post op. Protein question.

I have not been able to stomach protein. No shakes, protien water, protien bars, nothing. Everytime I try it makes me feel very nauseous or gaggy. Any one feel this way? Any suggestions? I know I need this in my diet so if any suggestions let me know, I'll be contacting the doctor on Monday.    — MzMonroe (posted on March 29, 2008)

I have similar issues with protein products. I take protein capsules. They're called Capsul-Pro and you can get them at www.nashuanutrition.com No nausea, bloating or taste issues. Works for me. Good luck!

Kimberly, I experienced the same problem as you when it came to intake of protein. What I do is take two partially chewed tums and then drink my protein. Doing this takes away the taste of the protein and no gagging. Much success! Ann

Kimberly, I was the same until I found a product called Necta, fuzzy Navel flavor. I mix one scoop with about 16 oz of water and a Crystal Light Lemonade To Go packet. It tastes like orange juice and has the same consistancy as orange juice. I mix it in a magic bullet. I ordered it on line at www.snytrax. com. It is the only one I can tolerate and I really like it. Good luck. pat

I had that! My dietician recommended Protat 64. You can only order it over the internet. It comes in different flavors. I get the Cherry and then I put it in a bottle of crystal light lemonade. Its really good and I can tolerate it! I hope this helps !

I was never successful with protein products. I ate cottage cheese, pinto beans from taco bell, and drank 2 glasses of skim milk every day to get my protein in. The milk helped keep my protein stable for a long time. Now, at 4 years out, I eat about 2 pounds of shimp most weeks. It works for me. Take care. Patricia P.

eat real food -- chicken, eggs, milk, hamburg, pork, tuna, yogurt, peanuts... the list goes on -- you do not have to drink protein or eat anythng special --you should be able to get in your 60-72 g of protein a day with real foods

I see you live in Cali. Trader Joe's has canned, pre-mixed protein drinks called Pure Protein. It's the only thing I can tolorate and it's very palatable. Try it--it will work for you. 35 grams of protein--4 grams of carbs. Good Luck. Pam .

I feel your pain. I am almost 3 months out, and I have struggled with protein since day 1. I eat only protein rich foods. This does help. Recently, I have been mixing: 2 cans of Atkins protein shakes and 3 cups of skim milk for a total of 54 grams of protein. I drink on this all day. The colder the better, so put it in the freezer. I found that if I can't smell it, it doesn't make me gag. I now drink it out of a to go coffee cup. Hopefully this helps.

Before you give up on your protien shakes altogether (because it really is a great way to boost your much needed protien intake) try playing with temperature and consistency. If you are using a shaker, try using a blender and adding ice. Once poured into a cup, stick it in the fridge for a few moments for the air bubbles to settle. If you are mixing with water, try mixing with Lactaid milk. That made a big difference to me! Keep trying products. There are so many different flavors - and some taste REALLY good. I especially like Arctic Frappachino and Dark Chocolate Mousse - both sold on Bariatriceating.com. I alternate them daily, but blend up a little more than a scoop with sweetner, ice and lactaid milk and take it to work. It is an advisement that you get 60-70g of protien, but you will want more to keep you full, to make sure your body is strong, and further down the line, to try to prevent your hair from thinning out. Good luck, Dani

What have you tried and how did you make it up? Any of these are what I use: 1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet). 2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken. 3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended. 4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or hand blender. They deliver 30g protein, less than 3g sugar, less than 200 calories, when made with water. Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat. I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of vit D3).

Thank you all so much for your replies. I spoke with the dietican, she says don't worry about supplements and try getting protien through food. I don't have a problem with chicken and other protien rich foods, but before giving up on the suplements I would like to try blending as some of you suggest or the capsules, any way I can get it in and quick. Thanks again....This was a huge help!!!!!!!!
