Question:
WHAT COULD CAUSE YOUR POUCH TO BECOME SORE AND PAINFUL AGAIN AT 6 WEEKS POST-OP?

I WAS DOING GOOD CONSUMING FOOD AND DRINKS. MY POUCH NEVER HURT AND I HAVE NEVER VOMITED. I STARTED EATING MEATS AT 4 WEEKS AND IT WENT FAIRLY WELL, WITH ONLY MINOR AWARENESS OF MY POUCH. THEN I CRAVED A CASSEROLE AND ATE AN OUNCE OR SO MORE THEN I SHOULD HAVE. I WAS FINE LAST NIGHT BUT THIS MORNING MY POUCH HURT WHEN I GOT UP. IT HURTS TO BEND OR MOVE MY TORSO. IT IS NOT SHARP PAIN BUT CONSTANT SORENESS LIKE BEFORE IT HEALED. ANY IDEALS ABOUT WHAT I HAVE DONE? MY 6 WEEK CHECK UP IS IN 3 DAYS BUT I AM AFRAID THAT I DID DAMAGE. If you had RNY there is no way you should be eating meat at 4 weeks. Or casseroles. I would call your dr. And if your dr told you that you can eat this food. I would go to a different doctor

I was 4 weeks out and was told I could start on deli and canned meats. Is that what you mean by meat or are you eating something other than that? I would call the doc to just make sure but if it's more soreness then pain, you may have just put too much in there but I would think it would have hurt you last night when you ate it. I don't think a bite of casserole is going to hurt you as long as it wasn't much and you don't do it often. Good luck!

Different doctors have different protocol...I was eating food right in the hospital the same day Post Op...My doctor doesn't do liquid stages first. I am four years Post Op. So please do not fret about what other people have been told by their doctors. They are all different. I in no way mean any disrespect to others who are told to not eat. I am only saying that some doctors have a different idea of what you can do. As for your problem...sometimes I felt like that too...and it almost felt like an infection or something. It could be that something iritated you pouch or stoma. Most of the time it goes away and things go back to normal. If it lasts more than a few days...like with ANYTHING if it becomes chronic go see the doctor! Otherwise try to go soft/ light foods and liquids and see if that helps and it usually does. If not...You have to get medical advice. It's scary when you don't know what to expect. I had pain for 6 months. I also had open RNY so, I suppose it took a while to heal. Good luck and take it easy

Hi Marsha, thanks for writing. Eating meat at 4 weeks could be a little soon, and you should call your surgeon to check in, but I think you just might have the flu. When I get sick, I don't get sick like I used to. My pouch hurts and I feel icky inside for a few days then I am fine. You may be having flu like symptoms. I am certain your surgeon will probably say "go easy" for a week with the food and give it time to heal, and it will probably do just that, so call them and check in, but go back to fluids and very soft foods. Be careful also as to how much you eat. Your pouch will stretch normally, all pouches usually do, but don't help it stretch. Your head will demand more, but your body needs so much less than what we have been putting in. It is a head game you have to fight. Take care, and hope this helps. Patricia P.
