Question:
Has anyone had surgery with Dr. Alan Schuricht in Philadelphia, Pa at UPHS?
I would like to have some in put on Dr Alan Schuricht as I have my consult with him this Thusday and although I really wanted to go with Dr Boe at the Barix clinic, due to insurance, it seems I have been redirected and felt very at home and sure of Dr Boe and would love to feel the same with Dr Schuricht if anyone could be so kind? — WannaBThin4OnceInMyLife (posted on December 11, 2007)

I had surgery with Dr. Kirkland, who is in with Dr. Schuricht. I too went
to the Barix Clinic in Langhorne first back in 2006 and had to put my
surgery on hold because my husband tore his rotator cuff and needed
surgery. When I called the Barix Clinic back to move forward, the surgeon
I had met was no longer there and I had to be put back on a waiting list.
I figured I may as well "shop around". I also figured that if
something major happened, I would rather be in the city hospital where they
would be better equipped to care for me. It was the best decision I made
because I have jokingly called myself "the poster child for reasons to
NOT have bariatric surgery". I had LOTS of complications, including
dehydration, anemia and blood clots. I am now almost 5 months out and am
down 75 pounds, so things are moving in a more positive direction, but I
was very happy with the office and the staff. I had my surgery at
Pennsylvania Hospital, right across the street from their office on 8th
Street. Good luck!

I have not met that Dr BUT my co-worker has. she had her RNY done about a
year ago by him. She referred me to him....all she could say was he has a
great sense of humor and knows what he is talking about. I dont know if
that helps at all.

Hi; I also had my open RNY done by Dr Kirkland at Pennsylvania Hosp. He was
an excellent surgeon and did a good job. I haven't met Dr Schuricht. The
only downside of the group that I found is that everything is very
"automated", the whole thing is so big and they do so many
surgeries that you kind of get put on the conveyor belt and moved thru all
the processes and spit out the other end. There is support and there are
people there for you; God knows they do so many that they have great
experience, but it is kind of a nonpersonal experience. However I am 11
weeks out and down 35+ lbs and feeling good. Good luck!

take a trip to the NJ board -- shout out to a lady named Jeanne -- she had
her surgery with alan -- my husband and myself both had dr. matt kirkland
who is in the same practice -- great great team -- i can't say enough about
them all -- it's actually 3 surgeons dr. wernsing being the other -- i hope
i spelled his name right :) very thorough on the information you will get
-- pre-op and post-op -- you will get a binder with everything you need to
know -- you will get your insurance requirements right up front -- the
office handles EVERYTHING -- you just sit back -- you will not get a
surgery date until you get an approval -- so there is no huge let down that
you were supposed to have surgery on such and such a date and now you are
telling me i can't -- none of that crap -- these are also GastroIntestinal
surgeons -- so if there is ever a hernia repair or whatever then they can
do that surgery also --you don't have to run around and find a new surgeon
-- the nutritionist is yours for life -- his name is Jim -- very very
realistic -- helps you with food choices -- does not look down upon you if
you have cookies -- he'll tell you the best cookies to buy for your weight
loss -- and you can call him or email him whenever you want -- after the
initial payment he is yours FREE -- the hospital does alot of bariatric so
they are very good care wise -- when ross had his surgery, his nurse
actually had the surgery a year earlier -- so that was helpful -- it is a
team approach -- you get the whole package deal -- the support meetings are
held at the PA hospital and are free the last tuesday of every month -- the
cardio and pulmonary dr's are right there in the same building -- the psych
is right there in the same building -- you do not have to travel all over
and find your own -- and they will not make extra appointments for you and
you will not have to spend a ton of extra money -- you do not have to pay
for any special program -- everything is right there and basically it's
only your co-payments -- i think they are going to be starting a 2 week pre
op protein diet -- this is to help your liver for surgery -- it will shrink
the size of your liver so the surgeon can get to your stomach better --
very important -- if you have any questions about the team please feel
free to contact me -- and check out the PA board and the NJ board and look
for Jeanne on the NJ board -- that was her surgeon -- good luck to you :)
