Question:
post op vegetarians
I was wondering if any post ops out there are vegan or vegetarians? I was wondering if it is possible to get in enough protein especially being vegan? Also what kinds of foods do you eat or recipes if any that you can give me. Thank you so much Jeannie — jjeanniespets1 (posted on July 28, 2007)

I am a vegetarian whole my life and did my surgery four months ago. i am
not a vegan though. but u can put protein powder in water and have it twice
a day. eat alot of lentils like beans, garbanzo beans, mung beans, black
eye beans. Just boil them and eat it . can u eat cheese? try low fat
cheese or fat free one. have tofu if u can. the best option is the add more
protien powder to ur shake to get ur protein. hope this helps .

Hi Jeannie, thanks for writing. You don't say if you are a vegetarian or
not, are you trying to become one? If you are please don't, this is not
the time to cut protein out of your life. You need every source of protein
you can get with wls, so be very careful. You would eat the same things a
regular vegetarian can eat, but you have to drink the milk, push the beans
and cheese and other vege protein sources like tofu that you can get. Your
body needs real protein though, so be sure to get it. I hope you thought
this through before surgery, protein is a key to success in wls, and to be
strictly vegetarian can be dangerous to your body with wls. Be sure you
get your protein in somehow. Take care. Patricia P.

I went to GVC and bought some protein drinks that come in grape and
different flavors, and they are really good and alot of protein in them. I
can't think of the name Isolete or something like that, but if you have a
GVC store or a vitamin and herbal store they will have them there, and
there is like 45 grams of protein or more in them. haven't had surgery
yet, but I have been checking into protein. lydia, [email protected]

I was vegetarian for 37 years. Incorporate the soy based products in your
veggie based diet. There are great boca, morning star, Loma Linda,
Worthington products out there. I particulary love the Loma Linda
Linkettes, High protein , low fat. Keep your tofu handy and also still
drink the Trader Joe'ss Old Word shakes with 45 grams of protein in one
shake.

I am not a total vegetarian. I do try and eat more plant based protein
meals. I try to use more beans and vegetarian based protein and burgers
and such. I have tried tofu but have a hard time with it. I have found
TVP which is textured vegetable protein which cooks up like hamburger. It
is a dry product that takes on the flavor of what is cooked in. It absorbs
and puffs up which works great in sloppy joe mix and spaghetti sauce mixes
whic has the texture of hamburger.
