Martha- most ortho specialists just hate to replace knees, hips etc on
obese patients, because of the chance they fail faster. I would continue
with your 6 month manditory weight loss, and in the mean time, see an
orthopedist to see what he/she will determine your weight has to be before
they will operate. These replacements are usually determined to be
elective, and not a medical necessity under the general rules- who knows,
sometimes with large amounts of weight loss, those knees just might feel
better- depending on the severity of their immediate injury. I know how
you feel, since I also need several body parts replaced, and the WLS was
necessary before those surgeries could be performed. Good luck and I hope
your knees give you some time off from the pain, i know, it sucks.

hi ther.
i have promblems with my knees too , i need a knee replacement but was told
by my ortho dr that he wouldnt do it until i lost the weight , he is the
one that first told me about this surgery ,after i have the wls then i will
have my knee surgerys, he wants me to be weighing around 150 before he will
do the knee surgery .so no , i would say they will do the wls first then
the knee surgerys.
good luck on your journey .

I was around 180 when I had my first hip replacement. I kept gaining and
they kept replacing my parts. I took this as the normal. Until I over
heard my ortho doctors refuse a hip replacement to another woman. I had to
ask why did they refuse her when I was by then around 280 and so much
larger than she was. They told me some people do everything themselves to
get well. ME! While others wait to be waited on hand and foot and never
heal right. It depends on you and your doctor. My shoulder needs to be
replaced right now. I decided to do the WLS first then the shoulder. I
was told I would have to wait 6 months after the WLS or I would not heal.
I do know my bone pain has gone from 10 to 7 on my broken tail bone because
of the WLS. I move around so much better now. You may find the same with
your knees. Try sitting with your legs raise even with your hips as much as
possible. They had me to do this with the knee replacement and I have
never stopped doing it, it really helps to keep the fluids off of your
knee. Ask ortho to drain your knees also. Sure it hurts right then but
the next day your knees will thank you for it

It might be a factor. I couldn't wait until my wls to get my knee done, so
I got it done 3 weeks ago and am doing fine, will reschedule my wls in
April. Meanwhile, I think it will heal faster being able to get
nourishment than after the wls. I want to be able to walk, walk, walk,
after the wls.

Bad kneew will probably help ouqualify for surgery, and the subsequent
weight loss might help your knees.
