Question:
Will gastric bypass make by HORRIBLE IBS worse?
I can't go anywhere without finding the bathroom. I might have diarrhea 4-10 times a day. I cannot eat alot of different foods. If its going to make it worse, I would rather be fat. — carolyn723 (posted on November 13, 2009)

I had IBS real bad pre op. But after I had the surgery, I had a little
diarrhea just from the surgery. But it sure did fix it. ONly to find out
that I had Fibromyalgia which is a symptom of that. So back to it I go.
But the surgery will make it better. I think because you are bypassing the
intestines that are the irritable ones. LOL Hope this helps.

I think mine has gotten better. But it depends on what I eat. In the
beginning my stools were loose, but as you start to eat regular food and
can eat food with fiber, it gets better. You'll probably always have some
problems.Good luck.

I've dealt with IBS my entire life and my symptoms sounded much like what
you describe. This was the 1st question I asked my surgeon and she said
that in her experience, most IBS Pts see significant improvement. I'm only
3 weeks post-op, but I've had tremendous improvement. I'm very hopeful
that my current experience will continue into the future. I feel like a
new woman - not having to run to the bathroom frequently, especially at
work!!! Everyone is different, but you can be hopeful! The benefits of
RNY far outweighed dealing with my IBS, so for me the surgery was totally
worth it.

This is a question that your surgeon should be able to help you with. Only
you can communicate to him what your body is telling you. Write down in a
journal your eating and bowel and urine results and run it by the
professionals. With that they may be able to figure out what is going on!

My IBS has improved since surgery, I have a lot less pain and frequency
than I used to. I would definitely discuss this with your surgeon and maybe
your primary care doctor as well. Good luck!

Hi ! This is a good question and one I didn't think to ask before surgery.
My IBS is pretty much gone. I had the IBS with diareah (sp) and as most
people know, the RNY often makes people suffer from constipation. Well the
ibs I had combined with the rny has made me normal again! I love it! Hope
you have good luck too! hugs, kim

I have IBS and Fibro-myalgia. I also had the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy a
little over a year ago. My IBS improved nearly immediately, and I did NOT
have my intestines re-routed. I think it just got better because I did not
have the sheer VOLUME of food going through my intestines that I did before
the surgery. I also discovered shortly after the surgery that I had some
fairly severe food allergies that probably were exacerbating the situation.
I would strongly recommend that you get tested for allergies, but as I
said before, I had improvement before discovering my allergies. I hope
this helps. Hugh

I was out of town for a week so I didn't get a chance to answer right away,
but I just had to...
I had IBS pre-op. I've found that I have had one or two episodes in the
last 15 months since my surgery, and they were VERY mild. I am now fairly
regular and don't have the constipation issues that others seem to
experience. I consider myself IBS free now!
