Question:
Has anyone gained weight while waiting for a surgery date.
I have weighed the same 252 for over a year. But since I have started this process I have gained 10lbs. — Athinnermom (posted on November 4, 2009)

well... a year ago i was 252. i began the 6 month pre-op diet and was of
the opinion that since i would be having surgery it would not really matter
if i gained weight. so i ate a lot and i gained 8 lbs and then i was
"yelled at" by the surgeon and the nutritionist so i decided to
buck up and lose that weight (well, also they told me that they wouldn't
consider giving me a date until i got those 8 lbs off). so i lost the 8
lbs, plus an additional 21. i chose weight watchers. i spent a few months
being hungry but then i had my surgery and my hunger has been drastically
reduced. :)

It took me a year to get approved and prepped for my surgery and so I
started out loosing but then after my approval and started taking all the
tests and stuff (sleep apnea, psyche eval, etc) I began to gain. My doc
made me take every bit plus some off. It took me two months to loose 26
lbs. He wanted me to lose 50 or more but I told him that I was at risk for
gaining since the holidays are coming but I was able to get down to 478
BEFORE my surgery and now after I have lost 77 lbs or more. Its all worth
it. Just eat healthy, load up on protein, stop the salt and get
hydrated...also try to build up some muscle mass in upper arms, boobies and
legs as much as possible. God bless you.

I gained about 10 pounds at the beginning of my six-month
"supervised" weight loss when I was beginning the approval
process. I think those of us who are going to have bypass surgery feel that
there will be foods we will no longer be able to eat so we want to have one
last go at them. I know I did. Trust me when I say that after the surgery
there will not be too many foods that you will not be able to eat totally.
I can eat almost anything I used to but only very small amounts and that's
fine with me. This was driven home last week when I was on a cruise to the
Bahamas, Aruba & Curacao and ate in the formal dining room every night
and enjoyed all the foods that were served. Happy to say that at the end of
the cruise I weighed exactly the same as the day we left. Most cruisers
can't say that!!!! The only time I got to feeling poorly was when I drank
two Pina Coladas back to back. All that sugar gave me my first experience
with dumping. Since my surgery back in March this has never happened to me
so I thought I was immune to it, I'm not it just takes a really high dose
of surgar to trigger it in me.
Godd luck with your upcoming surgery and know that most anything you are
experiencing others have also experienced so feel free to talk about it and
ask questions.

I gained about 10 pounds while I was on the 6 month supervised program. 8
of those pounds were in the last month before my surgery. I was one of
those people who ate everything I could right before thinking I could never
have it again! It didn't prevent my surgery or postpone it. It went on as
scheduled....

I did gain about 8 lbs. before my surgery however my doctor did not have a
strict 6 month diet. He said that the proof as to weather losing weight
before surgery helps is undetermined and he didn't see that it made that
much difference. I only had to wait 5 months and I kinda had a last horahh
with several of my favorite foods since I didn't think I would be able to
eat them again or at least for a long time. I did lose 12 lbs in the 2 week
pre op diet that was high protien low carb low fat lots of fluids. I found
that chewing my food really well helped too and it really helps with after
wards. I had VSG at the end of March '09 and have lost 87 lbs so far. I
hope your doc isn't too upset and that you have great success.
