Question:
How common is blood clots with this surgery
Were any of you put on anticoagulant therapy for precaution? — craftsh (posted on September 2, 2009)

Before having my RNY I had an IVC filter put in. My surgeon told me that
he ususally does this if the BMI is 50 or above. I think that any other
health concerns that affect an individual will determine the precautions
that your surgeon will take. I'm not in the medical field, this is just my
experiences and my guess.

My doctor was vigilant about wearing the boots, getting the heperan
injections, and stopping any/all medications that could thin my blood or
were known to cause clots before my surgery. I recieved heperin
injections several times in the hospital (felt like everytime I woke up a
nurse was giving the shot). One of the nurses did not but the boots back
on me when I sat in the chair... ohhhh was my surgeon NOT happy..... Your
doctor is doing everything he can to make sure that you come out of this
surgery, and keep you on the road your new life. I did not have to have
the filter put in, although many people in my nutrition class did. Your
doctor is basing your course of treatment on your weight, history, and risk
factors. If you have concerns with what is going on, ASK your doctor, and
keep asking till you understand. Your doctor will not mind, that is his
job!!! Best of luck to you!!!!

I had surgery on August 7, 2009. I was given Heparin and had the leg
massager things on as long as I was lying in bed in the hospital. After I
was released from the hospital, I tried to walk a lot, but no further
medication.

Yes. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't a name I recognized like
Heparin or Coumadin. But, I was given a shot in the abdomen just prior to
surgery and another shot each day after surgery. They were painless going
in (couldn't even feel the needle), but after a minute or so they stung a
little bit. I was told they were for preventing clots. I also wore the
compression "boots" faithfully while in bed, and
walked-walked-walked.

I haven't had my surgery yet but I am on plavix right now and my
cardiologist wants me to stay on plavix during my surgery. My surgeon wants
me to stop it. I have no idea what they are going to do.

My docter was very concerned about the possibility of my developing blood
clots. Don't know if it was because my BMI was 50 or because I was 50. :-)
I had my VSG surgery on 8/10/09 and I was given Lovenox blood thinner shots
as well as using the inflatible compression wraps around both legs while in
the hospital. When I came home, I had to give myself twice daily Lovenox
shots for 2 weeks and make sure to move around a lot, especially the first
week.

I don't know how common it is but I had one 5 days after surgery so it does
happen. I have had a history of blood clots after knee surgery 20 years
ago. I had a IVC filter installed but a small one either got through or
formed above the filter an found its way to my lungs. A couple of dayns in
the hospital with Lovenox shots was the result.

to be up out of the bed WALKING!!!!!! good luck and i hope this
