Question:
What can be used in the place of codeine or morphene?
I am severely allergic to both as they tend to make me itch and break out in hives. Has anyone else experienced this and what were they able to use to control pain while in the hospital and after returning home? — demolady1956 (posted on June 11, 2009)

I have a problem with narcotics also. I am 9 days post op. I used a
Dilaudid PCA until clear for oral meds and then 2mg dilaudid. I had great
pain control. Once home I have only required 3 doses of dilaudid.

Your doctor is in control of the "good meds" that they keep under
lock and key and only they will be able to give you something to manage
pain anyway! So doncha worry too much!

Like the others, I was given dilaudid after coming home from the hospital.
I didn't have to use many either. Now (16 months following Lap RNY) for
severe pain (menstrual cramps, severe arthritis pain in my knee) my PCP
gives me vicodin. Unlike Dr. House (lol), I take about 4-5 a month, not
4-5 an hour, lol. My PCP was very cautious about giving the vicodin to me
because of the risk of addiction. I take them responsibly and 30 pills
lasts me 6 months or more so I'm not using them enough to become addicted.
Also, it helps that they put me to sleep so I would only take one before
bedtime. I can't drive or function at work on them. For everything else,
I take arthritis strength Tylenol. Prior to surgery, I swore by Alleve and
Excederin. Of course, they are no-nos follwing surgery due the aspirin in
them. The bright side is that I have fewer headaches and pain in general
since I'm 154 pounds lighter, lol. Good luck to you! Marion

Hi Karen my Friend, I am wondering the same because I have had an problems
of abusing pain meds in the past(I am now in recovery). So where do we go
from here. I think the advice you got from others is to go with what you
doctor feels is best.

I'm allergic too. While in the hospital I was able to use Demerol. They
gave that thru a pump and I barely feel pain. I hope this help.
