I don't think there is enough research to find the answer to this
question...But many of us are becoming aware that meds are malabsorbed! I
have no clue what to do about it because I have not needed any pain meds
for 5 years...besides a little tylenol for aches and minor pains...It's not
working on more severe pain at all! I haven't needed any pain meds for the
last 5 years until recently when two tylenol worked for 5 mintutes and went
right back to full pain...I chewed two more and NOTHING worked.....Not fun!
I hear it a lot these days even with stronger prescripts too! Sorry I have
no answer....Still trying to figure it out myself!

I too have noticed my meds don't last as long. I had open RNY on Dec 12th
and ended up with a post op infection that I am still trying to recover
from. I have been given a few different precsciptions and notice that the
meds don't last as long as the dosage I am allowed by about 2 hours. Also
they gave me pills to help me sleep - they last exactly 6 hours and I am
awake. So in answer to your question Yes I feel the meds absorb differently
and go through your body quicker.

Unlike food, medication can be absorbed from anywhere in the GI tract, even
in the rectum (this is how suppositories work). Anyone who takes pain
meds, bypass or not, will experience tolerance... the body gets used to the
dosage you are on and needs a higher dose to get adequate relief. You need
to talk to your doctor about this.
Good luck.

My thought on this is to talk to your doctor to meds that can be dosed
through skin patches (i.e. Duragesic is a heavy duty pain reliever absorbed
through the skin via a patch)
