hi heidi- your nut should have given you a list- for every point of time post op up to at least 6 months post op. I understand some programs aren't as complete in their patient care etc. There are as many food plans as there are surgeons and nuts. My program -week 1-3 post op, full liquids, week 3-6 pureed foods- from the list only, week 6-9 soft foods. Week 9-12, incorp everything from above, trying one new food at a time, from the list only. Keeping in mind,- for our rules which i still follow even afyter 4 years, no more than 3 grams sugar per serving, watch the amount of white carbs- potatos, rice, pasta, breads etc. At one month, pots should be aT a minimum, but if your post op eating protocol calls for them, then youare ok. I am kind of a diehard when it cAme to my post op protocol- even though i was allowed bread, pasta, rice etc, those items swell in the pouch to 2-3 times the size eaten ( pasta and rice mainly) so left them alone, also all wraps, didnt and still dont want the carbs because to me at least, those foods are not important. you need to get into a meeting with your Nut, for a comprehensive list of foods you are allowed to eat, and when post op. I wish you luck. Its especially hard to follow A protocol if you arent given one As a guide in the beginnig. Congrats on being on the losing side. Doc Cindi 3.24.04 -230# and still maintaining the loss since 15 months out :)

Hello Heidi, yes as others have said your NUT should have given you a list of foods to eat as well as a schedule for after your surgery, week 1, week 2 etc. But I also found this really good website with wonderful recipes to make take a look and let me know what you think, I'm sure you will find several choices and will enjoy them as well. Take care and much continued success! http://www.renewedreflections.com/category/gastric-bypass-recipes/

Heidi- Find a nutritionist who specializes in bariatrics ASAP. Your surgeon can (and should have) recomended one. I love this book- Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery by Patt Levine (a patient) and Michele Bontempo-Saray. I am preop and have been trying some of the recipies. They are delicious and nutritious. Good luck.

Congratulations on your surgery and do not get down. You should have been given better info before your surgery date, however, there are excellent sources out there. Go to mayoclinic.com. When you bring up the opening page type in "diet after baritric surgery" and search. There is an excellent post -op diet to follow. Good luck!

As the others said, your NUT or surgeon should have given you information as to what you can and can't eat. There is a really good book available on this site (and Amazon) called Living and Eating Well After Weight-Loss Surgery - Before and After, by Susan Maria Leach. It is excellent. Not only does it answer a lot of questions we have, but it goes over the different stages of eating, gives you a lot of easy recipes, and best yet - Susan is a post-op Lap RNY and includes part of her journal of her experiences. It is well worth the money!

Debra F. posted a reply to this message. I tried going to mayoclinic.com and searching out the "diet after baritric surgery" and it did not work. I wanted to see this since I am a bandster and am curious. Were you able to find this? As for your post, are you adding protien powder to your soup and mashed potatoes? Have you tried baby foods? Gerber Organics savory carrots, potatoes and beef is a good one. and so is the herbed chicken and pasta variety. you just have to add either protien powder or the baby food meat to it for more protien and maybe a pinch of salt. I have a simple recipe for wonderful chicken liver pate if you like something like that. VERY high in protien and no need for protien powder with that one.

My surgeons office and his in-house nutritionist provided me with a whole notebook with suggestions and all of the recommended foods for each stage post op---I am so surprised that so many patients are left without the help they need after surgery. Maybe I was just lucky--anyway....here are some of the foods I chose. Crackers with peanut butter, cottage cheese with berries, Non-fat plain yogurt that you sweeten yourself with Splenda and then add fruit, oatmeal, tuna with lowfat mayo (mash well to seperate), deviled ham, bananas, lots of protein drinks--I could not handle most I tried but Myoplex dark chocolate fudge is very palatable. I add ice to it and a half banana, put it in my Bullet and it makes a great milkshake. I also like applesauce, canned pears chewed very well, soft low-fat cheese, cooked black beans with spices or non-chunky taco sauce and lowfat refried beans. I hope this helps you. Don't get discouraged---it all gets easier day by day. Just remember to eat slow and pulverize your food before you swallow it. As far as a list out there I am not sure but I will look around and see what I can find. You might also try googling "gastric bypass foods" and see what you get.
