The condition is pagophagia and is often associated with iron deficiency
anemia and I had the same problem until I got my anemia under control. I am
posting a link from the Mayo Clinic it has a very short posting on the
subject. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chewing-ice/AN01278

Yes...that's a symptom of anemia or iron deficiency...I take carbonyl iron
and got rid of my anemia in two months and down graded to iron deficiency
for 4 months...6 months later my iron is normal! Carbonyl iron is easy on
your system, non-toxic in high doses (even kid friendly) but highly
absorbably in the RNY pouch! I totally recommend it.

Yes eating ice is a BIG sign of iron deficiency. I have a friend that had
to have blood transfusions because her iron levels were so low. We all
knew when it was time for her next transfusion, because she would start
eating ice again. SO I would suggest you get to your docotr and get your
iron levels under control before you need the transfusions as well.

result of the surgery. I'm always eating ice.
