Question:
FOR WOMEN ONLY!
Okay, guys - this is for women only! I am 53 years old and have been going through menopause for a few years now, so my periods is few and far between. Last one was about 9 months ago. I had a dream that my period started up just before surgery, and low and behold . . . my period started yesterday! My surgery is scheduled for Friday and I am freaking out. Has anyone else had this happen? Does surgery have to be scheduled? I know they will do a catheter, and I am a little embarrassed about this now. What do I do? — Wendy M. You do not have to freak out. These are professional docotrs you are
dealing with and believe me, they have had the same situation many times
before and understand it completely. This issue will not stop surgery.
Don't worry, it will be fine. The catheter will be removed after surgery
in most cases. Ask when you go in and they will talk to you about it. Lyn

I had a friend that had RNY and her period started the morning of surgery
and she just made sure to make them aware of it (not an issue). I didn't
have a catheter for RNY???

Nothing to worry about.... just let the nurse in the preop area know.. I
had mine the day before surgery. I just made sure to take my own supplies
with me, the hospital ones are horrible!! Good luck with your surgery.

I got mine DURING surgery....Woke up in recovery with it. My surgery was
only 2 hours long...and I have no idea if I even had in a catheter in at
all to be honest. I just had to fast from all food and liquids for 12
hours and surgery was first thing in the morning...If there was one in...It
was a secret mission! LOL

Wendy, I am a nurse who specializes in Women's health. Believe me, we are
used to the menstrual cycle and it is no big deal. It is a bodily function
and as such not worth worrying yourself over. The period was probably
brought on by the stress of you worrying about it. It is not hard to place
a catheter into a woman who is menstruating, you will be cleaned off and
then the nurse will put the catheter in. The whole procedure may take 5
minutes. The surgery will go on as planned. You would have to
hemorrhaging for the surgery to be cancelled. Good luck.

A lot of women get it during surgery or immediately after anyway. I got
mine and I know I was warned ahead of time that I probably would. I was
glad because I was prepared with my own products.

I was due to get mine a few days after surgery, ended up getting it a few
days before surgery. I grabbed a nurse in preop and told her I had a tampon
in, she said to go to the bathroom and take it out before surgery. Right
after that, anesthesia came in and gave me versed, out I went. I was given
a blood thinner before surgery and woke up a mess in my room. Bless the
nurse that calmly took me to the bathroom, removed my catheter and helped
me clean up!! I'm a nurse myself and have done worse, but I was mortified.
She just said, "Don't worry about it, you'd do the same for me."
Then two weeks post op I got it again. Ugh. Hormones gone wild. Good luck
to you!

I am sitting here laughing as I read all the answers you have received! I
can laugh only because I am in the same situation as you. I have surgery
tomorrow and got my period over the weekend. I am also a nurse...you would
think I would be ok with this...but NOOOO I am freaking out too. But
rationally though, I know it is totally ok, really. It is just
embarrassing;)

I was on my period during surgery. I told the lady who gave me the
hospital gown to wear. She then gave me a HUGE pad and mesh undies to
wear. They put a special blanket/pad on the surgery table and all was
well. In recovery I mentioned to the nurse that I needed a pad and she
gave me one and also mesh undies again. No problem. When I got to my room
another nurse gave me a plastic bag full of pads. Just let the nurses know
and please don't be embarrassed. Congratulations on your surgery date!
God Bless you!!!
