Question:
Cereal or no Cereal....

Is there any cereal we can have? I have been craving a bowl of cereal. As of this Wednesday coming I am on a regular gastric bypass diet no restrictions other then our normal no sugar or high fat.    — Kimberlin Katayama (posted on July 28, 2008)

Cereal is full of sugar and carbs for the most part, I wouldn't recommend it. I do understand though, I crave it too. If you have to have some, make sure you eat only a small portion and stay very low on sugars so you don't dump. Good luck, Dawn

Like Dawn said, you're carb craving. Cereals are worthless. Don't do it.

I also tried this but did not do well. The carbs and the milk with it did me in. Good Luck.

Ok Kim.. each nutritionist has different answers to this question. I just saw mine yesterday and the answer was yes. She said no corn flakes or special K as they are pretty much soggy type cereals that are vitamin fortified but not high in protien. She did say that Cheerios or a nice Kashi cereal that stays crunchy. The nut said to have the milk on the cereal and check labels. The reason for having the milk on the cereal is you do not want to have dry cereal.. then have milk later thus having the dry cereal expand later in your pouch. Eating them together as a meal slowly counts as a meal. She said throw some almonds slices on for protien or whatever. Yesterday was an informative Nutrition session for me.

I really like Kashi Go Lean, has lots of protien and fiber, and not too sweet. I must say, I had lapband, so may be different for me, but I would check out the label and see if it would work for you.

Kim, here is an answer that kills two birds with one stone. FIBER ONE! For 1/2 cup serving (but 2 months out, I use 1/4) here are the counts. 60 cals, 1gm fat, 105 mg sodium, 180mg potassium, 25gm total carbs, 100 mg calcium, 14gm dietary fiber (WOW), 2gm protein and NO ADDED SUGAR! Add your mile counts to this, 1/4 to 1/2 cup should do. It is sweet so no extra sugar is needed unless you want a little Splenda. The best part is that it takes care of constipation, and that iron stuff is a real plugger. It is crunchy, delicious and so good for you. Give it a try. It has been a great joy for me, even well before this surgery. Lyn

Special K has a new cereal that is 9 grams of protein and low in sugar, I have a little with just enough milk to moisten it, and put a splenda on it. I find it is no more sugar or calories than oatmeal, or other breakfast choices. But I didn't have this until about 5 months out. Becareful what you eat this early. Your pouch is still healing. Good luck!

Hi Kim, Special K does have the high protein cereal, 10 gms of protein. I mix it with Danon low carb yogurt and get a 15 gr protein breakfast that I enjoy. Best of Luck, Mary-Anne

I get the craving for cereal too. I eat the High Protein Special K, GrapeNuts and Kashi Go Lean. I love the sugar free maple and brown sugar oatmeal too. I get that at Wal Mart and it is their brand. It is about 1.89 for a whole box of packets.

Look for cereal that is low/no sugar added and high fiber. The health food section usually has a lot of good choices. Fruit loops, honey smacks, lucky charms... just say no!

Have a cereal that is 2 grams of sugar like corn flakes and make sure you let the cereal get soaked by the milk (let it get soggy). I add a little splenda not bad. Hope this helps to take care of your craving. Lisa

there are very few cerals that are low in sugar the only ones i have found are Cheerios and Rice Krispies, but i will tell you from my experience and i am almost 1 yr postop RNY you need to be very careful and eat it very very very slow, because it has never settled well with me. i don't eat ANY Real Sugar so i am extra careful with choosing what i eat. see if the sugar free oatmeals will satisfy your cravings first. good luck and i hope this helps, Holly

LOL Trust me I know about those cravings. Although we aren't to have it. I have tried cereal once and a while, and its trial and error! I have WIC for my kids and Life Cereal is one of the cereals we can pick for them. I can't eat it! It doesn't even taste like it has that much sugar but its enough to make me dump! I can't even drink milk which deters me from cereal anyway, so thats why I crunch once in a while...you will learn very quickly what you can eat. Its all a learning experience!
