Which is better curing diabetes lapband or RNY?

Although Type II Diabetes is improved by any significant weight loss, there are some not-entirely understood neurochemical changes that occur after the RNY, but not the LapBand, that seem to essentially cure many people who suffer from Type II.

I chose the DS because I Wanted a surgery that has the least chance of long-term re-gain, is BEST at curing Diabetes (98%+), removes much of the hunger hormone Ghrelin, NO DUMPING, NO MARGINAL ULCERS and NO STOMA / STRICTURES, I chose the Duodenal Switch surgery. Do investigate all the options. I wanted my system to still operate the same which is why I chose to keep my pyloric valve intact with the DS. DuodenalSwitch.com With the DS: there is no stoma, so no stoma strictures; there are no limitations (other than volume) against drinking before, during or after meals; 80% of ingested fat is malabsorbed, allowing liberal use of eggs, butter, mayonaisse, healthy oils, marbled meats, cheese, etc., in the diet; 98.9% of type II diabetics are CURED of this devastating disease, with data showing stable cure over 10 years out; there is the best average weight loss and most durable (average 76% excess weight loss going out 10 years) of all of the bariatric surgeries. That's why I had a DS! Good luck to you!!!

I had Lap Band 4-16-08 and within two days I was off over 50% of my insulin. The RNY removes it faster but you have a more invasive surgery.

I had the lap-band 4-02-08. I was going thru 200 units of insulin in a 3 day period with the pump.... I am not a little over a month post op and I'm lucky if I use 50 in a 3 day period. I agree with Diane on how the lapband is less invasive. -Danielle-

In my experiences I would have to say RNY would. You lose weight quicker and tend to keep it off if you follow directionsa and do what your supposed to do.

As I understand it, rny is better at helping the diabetic, but both surgeries can be affective, I just think rny is more affective. When you lose weight, it helps your diabetes, but when you sever the stomach and re-wire the intestines, something about the mal absorption supports the sugar issues that diabetics have. I don't think they know why it helps, but I have seen it work for several people. What surgery cannot do is undo damage already done by diabetes, so if you have damage already, it won't reverse, but you can get relief with wls surgery if you are ready for a life change. If you don't change after surgery, you will make yourself worse in the end. If you get surgery, take it very seriously. Take care. Patricia P.

RNY is the answer you are looking for but keep in mind that RNY causes low blood sugar also. I have to eat some foods that slowly turn into sugar to keep my blood sugar up.

Ditto as with Toni above. Also you must consider YOURSELF. If you are a sweets eater, you can still do so easily with the Lap band; you can still drink sodas, milkshakes, etc... cake and wash it through with milk - you get the picture. Only YOU know yourself and how you are. I wanted a surgery that would kick my a55 if I mess up. :0D Good LUck!

Lap band has been proven to "reverse", place into remission diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes. Donna, RN

In the news recently it was found that RNY is the cure for diabetes and doctors are pushing to use RNY on non-morbidly obese diabetics to improve their health. It has been found in both lab rats and in human beings that diabetes is totally reverses when the duodenum is "by-passed" (so this would be true with also the DS surgery) An experiment showed that when the duodenum was then put back in place, diabetes returned. Three is the proof docotrs needed to begin using gastric bypass RNY on diabetics...It won't be long now til this surgery is approved by insurance companies everywhere soley to treat diabetics too! Here are the transcripts of the show and the facts From 60 Minutes. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/17/60minutes/main4023 451.shtml

I saw a very interesting topic on 60 Minutes a cpl of wks ago. They had 8 ppl on that had bypass, all 8 had diabetis, 6 had sleep apnea. After the bypass, all 8 were off their diabetic meds withing 4-7 days of surgery. And the sleep apnea patients were better after losing weight (of course). But what they were saying about the diabetis is that when the do the bypass surgery it by passes the duodenal switch and that's what is stopping the diabetis. The dr that conducted the study is also studying to see if this would be an option for diabetics without a weight problem. I'm sure if you looked back at the 60min. program arcives a cpl of wks ago, you could find it. Good luck and God bless.

RNY-RNY-RNY. Reason, any weight loss can help, but I had Diabities Type II for 25 years, and took a total of 19 drugs each day plus insulin. Less than 1 week following surgery, I had low blood sugar, sdo I dropped the insulin, then a few days later, low blood sugar so I started droping pills. less than a week later, no dibitic medication, and non since. My A1C 3 months later was 5.6. My blood pressure is 105/55 and my total colestroal is 95. The reason is the disconection of the stomach and the first third of the samll intestine. THis has been proven year ago to cure stomach canser patients that had diabities Type II. Today, it is a fact. RNY removes and reconects that first third to the last third of your small intestine so it only carries stomach acid, not food. That part of the small intestine is the part that process fat and Sugar as well a carbs. You can return to small amounts of complex carbs, but sugar and fat, other than olive oil or other simular oils will make you Dump. Dumping is swetting like low blood sugar, the shakes, rapid heart beat, and often cramps in the gut. It will also give you diareia. Thus, you don't eat them because your body can not process them. You can taste the wedding cake, but not the cornor peice with the rose icing and icing on two sides! If you want the 60 Minutes story, I will send it to you on DVD if you can tell me if you have a recorder, or I can run a Video tape for you. Please, no one else ask, I can not make it for everyone, and she asked and was told about the show, so I am offering just to you. Drop me a line as a direct reply. I am glad to help you with a tough decision. Best of success to you. Bill
