Question:
Please advise me on the first month after WLS...what can you eat?

I want to eat a variety of things- however, my weight to me is coming off very slow. I had my surgery Feb. 2008 and I've only lost 23 lbs. and I think it's not moving fast enough- so, I limit myself to what I eat. Is this normal too?    — Tawmika (posted on March 24, 2008)

23 lbs in a month is not bad at all. At 6 weeks, I was at 24 lbs lost, but I was at goal by 6 months. At this stage, you should not be limiting your foods, unless you're eating junk. Eat protein first, get plenty of fluids and don't cut back on calories. You are probably not getting enough calories. When I was slowing down on my weight loss, I found if I upped my protein and added a bit more calories, I lost more. Teresa

You are supposed to lose weight slowly...But you are losing rapidly...Your body is already starving without you trying to starve it further! You are going to make yourself sick if you try to diet on top of the surgery! Please do not miss your vitamins...It takes a good year (average) to lose 100 lbs! You are well on your way...Get your proteins in everyday and water too. The less you eat the longer your body tries to hold onto weight. So let it happen naturally while you are healing...later if you are still thinking it's not fast enough...start some work outs , but you have to eat or you will have trouble... Good luck.

Thanks Teresa I can't really eat more than two or three fork full of anything. I'm too afraid to eat junk food. My food intake consist of soups and salads. My protein that I can keep down are those shakes I get from Wal-mart. Any suggestions?

I looked at your profile, but it did not say what kind of surgery you had. The diet requirements are differe for different types of WLS. I had a RNY and I was and am still required to eat 70% of my calories in protein and the balance in fruit and veggies. After 6 months before I can have an type of Complex Carbs, and basically no standard cards until after a year. Be sure to complete your profile and it weill halp others better address your questions.

Well, glad to hear that someone is exactly where I am... I had my surgery feb. 7, 2008 and have only lost24lbs. I was beginning to think something was the matter with me. Thanks for asking this question and thanks for everyone else for their responses. I feel a little bit more hopeful!
