Question:
Monthly cycle

When lossing weight....Has anyone missed cycles or anything. I know I'm not pregnant, but I get the sore chest and sometimes even the cramping but I sometimes don't get the bleeding part (Not that I'm complaining) LOL    — Nikkijo30 (posted on January 22, 2008)

I am 3 months post op and my cycles have been messed up as well. I did get them, the first one was in November and it was 2 weeks late, the second in Dec. was 3 weeks late, coming on Jan. 1st! Happy New Year huh? Anyway, I was checked twice for being pregnant as I had to have a chest x-ray for a bad cough I've had. I think it's the surgery stress, as well as losing weight suddenly that throws the cycle off. I was regular as clock work before surgery, but that was because I was taking Glucophage for PCOS, (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome). It for some reason was what worked for keeping me on track and keeping me fertile when I had never been before. I had a son in 2004 after 5 years of being on glucophage. I stopped taking it after WLS because I figured those PCOS symptoms would go away, but now I'm wondering. I still get the cramping and the sore breasts as well, and can actually feel like I'm having ovary pain when I assume I'm ovulating, but the period doesn't come like it should. Hormones are rough on us women....that's for sure! Hope someone has a better answer....but wanted you to know it seems pretty common with WLS. Hugs.....Cheryl

hi Cheryl, I am three years post op. I have to say My cycle was always regular and not bad cramping prior to WLS, but afterwards... i was all messed up! At first I didn't get it... then it came with a vengence. It lasted 11 days and then came again 2 weeks later! I thought it would never end! after about 3 months of this I went to gyno doc and they found a cyst.. then it moved to other side. Very strange indeed. Ultimately I had minor surgery to remove the cyst, they did a D & C and did an Ablation. I was beyond having children anyway and doc figured this would stop or calm down my symptoms. So that's one way to go. Basically they cortirize things in there.. now IF I get my period, it's just spotting for a day or two. Much easier to live with! Good Luck! Pat C.

Only my first 2 periods were messed up. I missed my 1st period after surgery and my 2nd one was late. After that they went back to normal. (dang it! lol). This is quite normal. Just keep an eye on it and inform your surgeon/nutritionist. Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side!

I am 18 months out. I have had only two periods since my surgery but I had quit having periods for nearly 1 year prior to my surgery. My doctor told me it was because I was so overweight. I have met with my gyn, and all is well.

Hi Nikki, thanks for writing. It is not unusual at all for obese women who begin to lose weight to have problems with their bleeding. Here is the problem though. You may have a miserable flood when it comes. I would suggest that if you have missed more than two cycles, that you see your doctor/gyn and get a perscription to "encourage" it to start. There is a harmone that they can give you to motivate a cycle when you are stuck. You may still have a bad period, but it could jump start you to regular cycles. If you wait too long, you could have an a very bad period. Take care. Patricia P.

i too suffer from PCOS and stopped my periods about 2 years before my surgery, but since surgery (Oct.1st,07) they have been like clockwork. it is different for everyone!!!! good luck and be sure you're not pregnant then let nature run its course unless you start having other problems then see your GYN. hope this helps...Holly

My periods have been an unpredictable mess since my surgery. I skip one, I get it late, it's short, I have pain, but nothing else. I am told this is normal. I at least dont have to worry about pregnancy as I have a tubal.

I have not had periods for 3 years (other than some spotting here and there) because I have an IUD in and no periods is one of the *very welcome* side effects. However, after surgery (11/26/07) I got a full crampy heavy nasty 10 day long period in December and I am on another one now. I have been wondering if somehow my surger could have done something to the effects of my IUD and plan to see my gynocologist to make sure the IUD is still in correctly. I do not enjoy having periods again!! Good luck!
