Question:
Examples of protein?

This might seem a little silly, but I wanted to know if people had some good examples of high protein foods. I'm so picky when it comes to food, the only things I like are chicken and shaved turkey. Peanuts and cottage cheese just taste awful to me. Any ideas for my next grocery store run?    — wecangetright (posted on January 8, 2008)

Timely question. I was researching high protein foods, and found a web site, www.whfood.com . I liked the list there so much, that I copied it to my computer, and emailed it to my bariatric support group leader. This site contains a listing of 55 foods, and ranks them as to protein content, and nutrient density of protein. This means you can find the food that has maximum protein for a portion size. This list has fish, seafood, vegetables, yogurt, eggs, cheese, etc. Top 5 (in decending order) are Cod (baked or broiled), Yellowfin Tuna (baked or broiled), Shrimp (steamed or boiled), Snapper (baked or broiled), and Venison.

Jack Link's beef jerky at Walmart. I am a chicken/turkey fan as well, but do occasionally eat steak and pork but I LOVE beef jerky! There are 14 grams in just 1 ounce of tihs stuff! It's also low in calories and sugars etc. Cheese, but watch the fat in that. Most of the soft cheeses are better for you like goat's cheese etc. I do use the south beach diet cheese as well. 60 calories in each stick and 5 grams protein in cheddar and 6 in the white cheese. Good luck and God bless

I have to agree with the beef jerky, it is nice when you are on the go alot. However, becareful of the sodium! Also string cheese, anything you used ground beef for before now use turkey and that will help increase it too. Your shakes can still come in handy when you run out of options.

I could only tolerate a few things at first and I am also very picky. I HATE cheese so that was out--I get so jealous of my husband when he can just grab a quick protein snack like a stick of cheese of pepperoni or jerky and here I am not knowing what to grab because I hate most meats too, LOL. Anyway, when I was at work I would keep a jar of peanut butter in my desk and eat it by the spoonfuls (I know that sounds yucky, but I was making myself even eat that). Or I would use the meat salads like chicken salad, tuna, even egg. Another weird thing is pork rinds.... They have virtually no carbs and they have protein. Also they will give you satisfaction for the "chip" cravings. Sorry I am not more help, I am kind of in the same boat as you:(

Cashews, Almonds, and other nuts, shrimp, scallops, fish, cheese, eggs, dairy products (watch for sugar/carb--lactose is a sugar), textured vegetable protein "TVP", veggie burgers, veggie dogs, regular hot dogs, tofu, seitan, protein shakes, protein bars, high protein cereals.... you can also make your own protein shakes or increase the protein content in foods you are already eating by adding BeneProtein or other unflavored protein powder. You can also buy high protein pudding and high protein broth. One thing to watch both the hot dogs and beef jerky is nitrate/nitrite content. Nitrates/nitrites are horrible for you... http://www.nitrate.com/faq3.htm

My stand by favorites are Frigggo brand lite cheese sticks: 60 calories and 8 grams of protein, hard boiled egg (i pitch the yolks), I love cottage cheese... I used to hate it! Try mixing it with a little bit of powdered sugar free pudding mix and a small spoon of cool whip... I mix that with frozen berries and fiber one... Protein and fiber... it's good! I am a year out! Good Luck!

try sprucing your cottage cheese up with SF Jello powder (as in right out of the box unmade). It is high in protein, low in fat and calories. It may sound iffy but you'd be surprised!
