Question:

My PCP says that gastric bypassers suffer from foul smelling gas elimination. Is this true? — Sandsma (posted on May 28, 2007)

Gets better with time. The BMs do too. Im 16 months out and its better than
at first. Its because of the protein. We (SIL and MIL had the surgery) call
them protein farts. lol

Yeah, but I have found it is largely related to what I eat. I dont even
consider it a problem though. When you add up all of the positives, that
is a pretty small negative.

Good jesus YES!!.....lol I bought some of that internal body deodorant
called Devrom from the place that manufactures it called Parthenon. They
sell it on OH but you pay twice as much for it on OH. Only $9.95 a bottle
from Parthenon. It works wonders.......lol Tastes like banana's. They are
chewable. Mickey...........

I also use the Devrom and it helps. It's not (the gas) THAT bad. I'd
rather be a healthy weight and have occational gas than morbidly obese. I
get my Devrom from www.c2linfo.com . It tastes yummy, too.

Oh man...after 5 years post op, I wish I had better news for you. It is
just as bad, tho BMs are not. It seems to develop during the day and act
out after 6pm at night. I do drink diet soda and coffee so my diet
encourages it, but I find creative ways to leave the immediate area of
people and let it go privately. I NEVER had gas like this pre-op. I take
Gas X but you still get a little gas. I might try that stuff they are
talking about in earlier posts. Best of luck to you on your journey! Kathy

Sorry but your doc is making a big generality- and even if you are one of
the ones who does have that side effect there is an OTC med - think it is
called Devrom- which will take care of it. Remember that not everyone
reacts the same way to the same procedure- we are all different. Good luck.

Not at first and now, not very often...butt every once in a while - watch
out. I am sure everyone is different - i would say on average I don't have
issues with smelly anything....

Fabreeze!! Works great and they sometimes have sample sizes in larger
stores like Walmart, you can slip that in your purse. Being 18mos out I
have learned that some of it can be tied to your diet, especially when you
anything high in carbs.

peee ewwwww. Yes, but I wouldn't change anything. happy to be a size
10-12, and the bms are harder to scrub from the toilet, too, sorry, but
it's true. I never had stinky bodily emissions before surgery. now i rely
on the vanilla air freshener can to always be full. good luck with your
surgery.

It depends on what you eat. My partner had it and if she has real dairy
products or ice cream -- look out Nellie. Mine are not foul -- they are
just loud or they are silent poots -- but thank God no smell. Sometimes
when I'm at work and can't get to the bathroom so that is when the silent
ones come out. If my stomach starts hurting I'll go to the bathroom and
let it all hang out.
However, its getting better and will eventually dissipate. You just have
to watch what you eat.
Everyone is different, a friend of mine had the surgery over a year ago and
she said she hasn't had any gas issues.

I am 2 months post op and i haven't had any foul smelling odors from gas,
poop or pee. It must be different from person to person.

At almost 6 years out I still peel the wallpaper and the paint underneath
every day with the smell! There are containers of spray in every room of
the house, and one next to my side of the bed and my husband's. Some
nights I even sleep on the couch it is so bad. As you can tell by the
answers...your mileage may vary. Blessings

Yep. You learn what to eat in public and what to eat in private.

YES!!, both are foul smelling, I have gas more often than I ever had but
like the other posters said, its something I am willing to live with, its a
minor problem compared to the other problems I had pre-op. My husband has
flatulence problems and he has never had surgery, so now I can
"compete" with him after all these years. Good luck!

Its mostly caused by poor food choices, for me milk products. But I had gas
before WLS, and my one dog puddle skinny poodle had very bad gas tonight
laying next to me on the sofa. Its very individual and shouldnt discourage
someone from WLS. Before surgery I had BAD body odor from perspiring so
much.

Mary, the answer is some do and some do not. I am 3 years post rny surgery
and I have more gas than I did before, but most of the time it is a normal
odor. I do think that the duodenal switch surgery does produce a fouls
smelling gas, much more than the rny. Hope this help. Patricia P.

If you start taking fiber (me- 4 Tbl Metamucil daily) it really helps cut
down on this. And, the fiber helps you lose weight better.
