Question:
How long does the hair loss last?

My hair started falling out the first of November, 4 months after my LapRNY in July. My ponytail is already 5/8 less in circumference than it was pre-op. I take 50mg zinc, 3,000 MSM, 5,000 mcg Biotin, GNC hair formula vitamins, Silica Complex by Puritans Pride, B-50 complex, CoQ 10-100mg, 500 mg Pantothenic Acid, multiple vitamin, Citrical, and 60-70 grams of protein daily. I'm just sick of this hair loss and want to quit it NOW! Any suggestions?    — silverkrisi (posted on January 14, 2007)

Double your protein! It happened to me too- Then I realized I had not increased my protein at the proper time. You are far enough out start increasing your protein. Add the unflavored powder to everything. Get Isopure drinks- fruit flavored helps can get at GNC- in bottles I mix them with other drinks too to snack on protein through out the day. It will come back- also what I had to do- when my hair started growing back was to get it cut so I got rid of the hair that was weak and under nourished- but that will come much later. Funny too is my hair came back in super curly. I only had wavy hair before- don't know if it's also because I am menopausal too.

I started out in April before surgery with enough hair for 4 people -according to my hiardresser I now have a normal amount although to me it feels like next to nothing- anyway at my Kaiser support group a couple of months ago we were discussing this and several women who are several years out said it would last until we were about 1 year post op and then the body starts to correct itself again. I still have about 4 months to go so will keep you posted. Donna 4/17/06 LapRNY 286/152/145

HI, I too had lost hair about 4-5 months after open rny surgery.. it got thin but never see through thin, my bangs kind of got short on one side.. but they did grow back in and seem back to normal now. I would say things got better around the 12 month mark.. I am now about 15 months post op.. I wasnt taking even half of the supplements you are taking, but I did make sure to get my proteins in. I think it happens to most people, and it will just take time, Take care, April

I think everyone loses hair, but not at the same rate, after any kind of major surgery. I'm told it is the anesthetic. And things may help not lose quite so much. But I've lost a lot of money trying to keep it from happening and it happened anyway. One thing I've been using after getting tired of wigs, (I never lost all my hair, just telefusion, thinning all over) is Jerome Russell color spray. My hair is (dyed at this point,) but naturally red and I use the coffee colored to spray on my scalp and it hides the thin hair. I got mine at Walgreens. I take all kinds of supplements and have spent hundreds of dollars on shampoo, etc , which is supposed make it grow. Nothing helps but time. So if it makes you feel better to try stuff, do it but it will just make you poorer.

I havent had the surgery yet, but in preparation I asked my beautician the last time i was in for a haircut about anything that may help prevent or help in hair loss and she told me about this shampoo treatment stuff called "Nioxin" I have been using it an my scalp and hair feels more healthy, this stuff is supposed to thicken your hair and aid it in protien. It is kinda spendy as all the shampoos are in the hair shops, it was reg. 24.00 for the 2 bottle treatment but I bought it when it was on 50% off sale to try it, I think I will buy more when it goes back on sale. Hope maybe this helps you.

One suggestion I have put less stress on your hair by not putting in a ponytail...I had below shoulder length hair when my 4 months hit and the hair started to fall out. i did the vitamins and watched my protein intake and even used the Nioxin shampoo which all help but I found by cutting my hair (which I really didn't want to) but it helped to reduce the stress on it by not having to pull it back. It also reduced my overall stress of losing it,that I saw it start to lessen at about 8 months. Please be aware it can reapper at anytime! Mine did at about 13 months when I screwed up on my intake of protein...I was taking in way too low amount and my hair started to come out again like crazy. Good Luck!

There is nothing you can do for post op hair loss. It is a side effect of anesthesia not WLS. It usually starts at 3-6 months post op and last for 2-3 months. You can do things to prevent it before it starts IE: nioxin, but once it starts, it is too late. Don't worry......once you start, you won't go bald. Almost no one will notice but you. Give it time...If you are eating right and taking your vits, it will come back in no time. Isn't it worth the weight loss to loose hair temporarily????

Hair loss has nothing to do with anesthesia. It is do to lack of Protein. Your hair needs protein from food. Try to eat some gelatin, not jello. You will find it near the jello or in the baking products. I'm not sure if I spelled gelatin right but also get some shampoo at a beauty salon that is for hair thickening it should help.

I agree, hair loss is due to rapid weight loss, or something lacking in your diet. I have undergone several surgeries with general anesthesia and have never lost hair. I am told that the hair loss is temporary, but in the meantime I've started taking Biotin just in the slight chance it may help.
